Canucks Trade Proposal Could Finally Deliver Second-Line Center
The Vancouver Canucks have long recognized a key missing piece in their roster — a true second-line center who can generate offense and alleviate some of the workload from Elias Pettersson. With the new season approaching, time to address that gap is running out.
Recent reports indicate that the Canucks and the Minnesota Wild may have explored trade talks for restricted free agent Marco Rossi. NHL insider Frank Seravalli revealed that Minnesota turned down a summer offer from Vancouver that included a first-round draft pick. However, with discussions still possible, there remains a chance to strike a deal.
Heavy.com floated a trade scenario in which Vancouver would send winger Nils Höglander, promising center prospect Aatu Räty, and a 2026 second-round draft pick to the Wild in exchange for Rossi, a 23-year-old forward.
Minnesota’s Stalled Negotiations with Rossi
Selected ninth overall in 2020, Rossi has developed into a smart, two-way center with solid offensive and defensive skills. Last season, he tallied 24 goals and 36 assists over 82 games. Though undersized at 5-foot-9, 182 pounds, Rossi’s high hockey IQ and playmaking ability have made him a valuable asset.
Contract talks with the Wild have reportedly stalled. Rossi is believed to be seeking a seven-year, $49 million deal, but general manager Bill Guerin is known for careful budgeting, especially with star Kirill Kaprizov’s free agency looming. This situation could push Minnesota to consider moving Rossi in exchange for both present and future assets.
What the Trade Offers Both Teams
Höglander, 24, brings energy, versatility, and NHL experience, having recorded 25 points last season after a 36-point campaign the year before. Räty is a skilled young center developing in the AHL, while the second-round pick adds long-term value.
For Vancouver, acquiring Rossi would give them a dependable two-way pivot to complement Pettersson, potentially solving one of their biggest roster needs. For Minnesota, the return offers a ready-to-play winger, a high-upside prospect, and a draft asset to strengthen their future.
While nothing is certain, this trade idea addresses the needs of both franchises and could be the type of bold move that benefits each side in the long run.
