Breaking: St. Louis Cardinals Officially Cut Ties With Three-Time All-Star First Baseman
The St. Louis Cardinals have officially moved on from one of the most recognizable names on their roster, completing a blockbuster December 2025 trade that sends three-time All-Star first baseman Willson Contreras to the Boston Red Sox. The deal marks a significant turning point for both franchises as they head into the 2026 season with clear but contrasting objectives.
According to league sources, the Red Sox acquired Contreras in exchange for right-handed pitcher Hunter Dobbins and two prospects, Yhoiker Fajardo and Blake Aita. In order to facilitate the move and maximize their return, the Cardinals also agreed to pay down a portion of Contreras’ remaining contract. The trade effectively ends Contreras’ tenure in St. Louis after several seasons in which he served as both a middle-of-the-order bat and a veteran clubhouse presence.
For the Cardinals, the decision reflects a broader organizational shift. After another disappointing campaign that fell short of postseason expectations, St. Louis has committed to reshaping its roster with an emphasis on flexibility, pitching depth, and younger talent. Financial flexibility was also a major factor, as shedding part of Contreras’ salary gives St. Louis more room to maneuver during the remainder of the offseason.
From Boston’s perspective, the move addresses a clear need. The Red Sox have been searching for a reliable right-handed power bat, particularly one capable of handling the unique dimensions of Fenway Park. Contreras’ experience, plate discipline, and ability to drive the ball to all fields made him an attractive target as the organization looks to return to contention in the American League.
