Cardinals Linked to Former Rival Outfielder as Potential Free-Agent Addition

Among the names floated is former Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jesse Winker, a player familiar to Cardinals fans from years of divisional rivalry.
After several seasons of falling short of postseason expectations, St. Louis made the bold decision to overhaul its roster during the offseason. The organization has shifted its focus toward long-term success, prioritizing the development of young talent and stockpiling prospects. Winker, who most recently suited up for the New York Mets, enjoyed the best stretch of his career with the Reds, where he established himself as a dangerous hitter. However, his recent seasons have been inconsistent. A back injury cut short his 2025 campaign, and his overall production in recent years has not matched the high standards he set earlier in his career. In fact, he has performed at or below replacement level in three of the past four seasons, making him a somewhat risky signing.
Still, there are reasons to believe he could contribute in the right role. Winker has historically excelled against right-handed pitching, boasting strong career numbers in those matchups. Given that the majority of pitchers in the league throw right-handed, his specialized skill set could still offer value to a team willing to use him strategically.
One potential avenue for his addition lies in the Cardinals’ current injury situation. Outfielder Lars Nootbaar is recovering from double heel surgery and is expected to miss significant time. With uncertainty surrounding his return, St. Louis may need to find a temporary replacement to fill the gap in the outfield. Winker could step into a platoon role, providing offensive production against right-handed pitchers while complementing other players in the lineup.
If the Cardinals were to sign Winker, the move could serve multiple purposes. Not only would he help bridge the gap created by injuries, but he could also become a valuable trade asset.
