Auburn has strengthened its roster by adding size and interior presence, securing a commitment from former Santa Clara center Bukky Oboye, the program confirmed on Friday. The 7-foot-1 Houston native brings three years of college experience with him after playing for the Broncos, where he developed into a key contributor on a successful team.
During the most recent season, Oboye played a major role for Santa Clara, starting 34 of the team’s 35 games. He served as a central figure in the lineup, helping guide the Broncos to a 26-win campaign. Notably, the team earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament, marking its first appearance in the national competition since 1996. His presence in the paint was instrumental to both their defensive stability and offensive efficiency.
Head coach Steven Pearl expressed strong enthusiasm about the addition, highlighting Oboye’s physical tools and potential impact. Pearl described him as a uniquely gifted athlete, emphasizing his combination of size, mobility, and explosiveness. According to the coach, Oboye’s ability to run the floor and elevate around the rim allows him to influence the game significantly on both offense and defense, making him a valuable asset for Auburn moving forward.
Statistically, Oboye made the most of his time on the court despite playing a limited number of minutes. Averaging 17.7 minutes per game, he contributed 7.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per outing. His efficiency stood out at a national level—he led all Division I players in two-point field goal percentage, converting an impressive 77% of his attempts. Additionally, he ranked among the top 50 players in the country in block rate at 8%, according to KenPom metrics.
Although he averaged fewer than five shot attempts per game, Oboye demonstrated excellent productivity when adjusting for playing time. When projected over a full 40-minute game, his numbers translate to 17.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per contest, illustrating his ability to produce at a higher volume if given more opportunities. His overall efficiency was further reflected in his Player Efficiency Rating (PER) of 22.4, which ranked as the second-highest among Santa Clara’s regular rotation players.
Auburn’s coaching staff has clearly made a concerted effort to reshape its frontcourt during the offseason. The addition of Oboye is part of a broader strategy to add size and versatility to the roster. He becomes the second player standing at least seven feet tall to join the program ahead of the upcoming season, alongside French big man Narcisse Ngoy.
