BREAKING: Oliver Marmol Confirms Cardinals Could Trade Another Struggling Starter in Major Roster Shake-Up

Cardinals Positioning Dustin May as Potential Trade Deadline Asset if Veteran Pitcher Raises Value

The St. Louis Cardinals may be setting themselves up for another significant trade deadline move, with veteran right-hander Dustin May emerging as a likely candidate to be dealt if his performance improves over the coming months.

St. Louis entered the 2026 season in transition mode, and while the team remains competitive in the National League Central, the organization’s long-term focus continues to center on building for the future. That strategy could make May one of the Cardinals’ most valuable trade chips if he pitches well enough to draw strong interest from contenders.

The Cardinals took a step forward Monday night by snapping a four-game losing streak with a dramatic comeback victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. The win pushed St. Louis to 15-13 on the season and within striking distance of first place in the division.

May started that contest and delivered a solid outing, pitching six innings while surrendering only two earned runs. Although he did not factor into the decision after the Cardinals rallied late, his performance offered another encouraging sign as he works to increase his value.

St. Louis signed May to a one-year, $12.5 million contract during the offseason, a move widely viewed around baseball as both a rotation upgrade and a potential future trade investment. Given the Cardinals’ rebuilding direction, many around the league believed from the outset that the organization could eventually flip May to a contender before the trade deadline.

That possibility remains very much in play.

According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals are hopeful that May can elevate his performance enough in the coming months to create a competitive market for his services.

Per Goold, the organization’s ideal scenario is for May to pitch at a level that allows St. Louis to maximize his trade value and demand a substantial return from interested teams.

That approach would fit perfectly with the Cardinals’ long-term strategy. Rental starting pitching often becomes one of the most sought-after commodities at the trade deadline, and teams in playoff contention frequently pay premium prices for reliable arms capable of strengthening a postseason rotation.

If May regains top form, St. Louis could find itself in position to capitalize significantly.

The Cardinals have already focused heavily on stockpiling young pitching talent in recent months, but adding more controllable arms and prospects remains a priority as the front office continues reshaping the roster.

Trading May could accelerate that process.

So far this season, May owns a 3-2 record with a 5.28 ERA through six starts, spanning 30 2/3 innings pitched. While the numbers have not yet fully reflected dominant production, the Cardinals believe there is still time for the 28-year-old to improve his statistical profile and boost his market value before the deadline.

Following the offseason trade of Sonny Gray, May has become the most experienced starter in St. Louis’ current rotation, giving him added value both internally and externally.

His contract situation also makes him particularly attractive. In addition to his expiring deal, May holds a mutual option for 2027, which could provide interested teams with added flexibility and increase his appeal compared to a standard rental.

Most importantly, the Cardinals maintain significant leverage in any potential negotiations. If May pitches well, multiple contenders could enter the bidding, allowing St. Louis to create a competitive market and potentially secure a strong package of prospects in return.

For a franchise focused on retooling its roster while remaining competitive, moving May at peak value could prove to be one of the organization’s most important decisions this season.

If his performance trends upward over the next several months, expect Dustin May to become one of the most talked-about names on the trade market as the deadline approaches.
