St. Louis Cardinals Make Unexpected Roster Move Ahead of Dodgers Series
The St. Louis Cardinals made a surprising roster decision on Friday, announcing that left-handed pitcher Luis Peralta has been designated for assignment just days after the organization claimed him off waivers from the Colorado Rockies.

The move comes as the Cardinals prepare to open a home series against the Los Angeles Dodgers following an impressive 10-5 road victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday.
Peralta’s brief stint with the Cardinals ends before he ever had the chance to appear in a game for the club. Earlier this week, St. Louis had claimed the 25-year-old southpaw off waivers from Colorado and immediately optioned him to Triple-A Memphis, a move that suggested the team viewed him as bullpen depth or a developmental project.
However, the organization quickly reversed course.
On Friday, the Cardinals officially announced on social media that Peralta had been designated for assignment, removing him from the club’s 40-man roster almost immediately after acquiring him.
The roster move appears tied to St. Louis selecting the contract of left-handed pitcher Jared Shuster from Triple-A Memphis, adding him to the active roster in preparation for the weekend series against the Dodgers. By designating Peralta for assignment, the Cardinals created the necessary 40-man roster space for Shuster.
Peralta’s departure marks an abrupt end to what may go down as one of the shortest tenures in recent Cardinals memory.
The left-hander has appeared in 23 major league games across the past two seasons with the Rockies. During the 2025 campaign, he struggled significantly, posting a 1-3 record with a 9.47 ERA over 22 appearances. Despite the rough numbers, Peralta remains a relatively young pitcher at 25 years old, and his age could make him an intriguing reclamation project for another organization if he is claimed again.
It is also possible the Cardinals could retain him in the organization if he clears waivers and accepts an outright assignment to Triple-A.
The sudden decision sparked immediate reaction from fans and analysts on social media, many questioning why the Cardinals claimed Peralta only to move on from him so quickly.
One fan wrote, “Why even pick him up if he’s already gone,” while another simply posted, “WHY.”
Others responded with humor, joking about Peralta’s extremely short-lived time with the franchise. One account quipped, “How will the Luis Peralta era be remembered?” while another sarcastically referred to him as “Cardinal legend Luis Peralta.”
For St. Louis, the move reflects the constant roster maneuvering teams often make early in the season as they evaluate bullpen options and seek immediate pitching help.
The Cardinals enter Friday’s matchup against the Dodgers with an 18-13 record, placing them third in the National League Central standings. Despite their solid overall record, St. Louis has been inconsistent at home, posting a 7-8 mark at Busch Stadium through its first 15 home games.
The upcoming series against Los Angeles represents a significant test for the Cardinals as they continue trying to establish themselves as contenders in a competitive NL Central race.
Following the Dodgers series, St. Louis will remain at home to begin another divisional matchup Monday against the Milwaukee Brewers.
After missing the 2025 MLB playoffs, the Cardinals are looking to rebound this season and return to postseason contention, even as roster adjustments continue to shape the club’s early campaign.
