Seattle Mariners Add Left-Hander Suarez After Waiver Claim From Braves
The Seattle Mariners have added another arm to their pitching staff, claiming left-handed pitcher Suarez off waivers from the Atlanta Braves on Sunday as the organization looks to strengthen its bullpen depth for the remainder of the season.
Because Suarez is out of minor-league options, Seattle must keep him on its 26-man active roster once he officially joins the club. The Mariners are expected to utilize the 28-year-old southpaw in a multi-inning relief role, giving the bullpen another versatile arm capable of covering extended outings when needed.
Suarez arrives in Seattle after spending the early portion of the season with Atlanta, where he struggled to find consistency on the mound. In eight appearances — including one start — he posted a 6.61 ERA and 2.08 WHIP across 16.1 innings of work. Despite the rough results, the Mariners clearly see enough upside in Suarez to justify giving him an opportunity. Seattle’s front office has consistently shown a willingness to target pitchers with strong raw stuff who may simply need mechanical or situational adjustments to unlock better performance. Suarez fits that mold, offering a live arm from the left side with swing-and-miss potential if he can improve his command.
The move provides Seattle with another bullpen option capable of handling multiple innings, an increasingly valuable role over the course of a long season. Multi-inning relievers can help preserve the rest of the bullpen, especially during stretches of heavy workload or when starting pitchers fail to work deep into games. Seattle’s pitching development system has built a strong reputation in recent years for helping pitchers maximize their talent, and the club may believe Suarez can benefit from a change of scenery.
