The St. Louis Cardinals made another roster adjustment on Tuesday by recalling infielder from Triple-A Memphis. The move came just one day after Saggese had been sent back down to the minor leagues, highlighting how quickly roster situations can change during the long Major League Baseball season.
Saggese’s return to the big league roster was made necessary after the Cardinals placed veteran infielder Ramon Urias on the injured list because of an elbow issue. With Urias unavailable for the foreseeable future, St. Louis needed additional infield depth, and Saggese quickly became the logical choice to fill the vacant roster spot.
Although his demotion on Monday may have seemed disappointing at first, Saggese’s stay in the minors turned out to be extremely brief. The Cardinals clearly still value the young infielder and believe he can contribute at the major league level, especially during a period when the club needs reliable options around the infield.
At 24 years old, Saggese continues to work toward establishing himself as a consistent contributor in the majors.
