The Philadelphia Phillies had an off day on Monday following their recent home series against the Colorado Rockies. The team managed to take two of the three games in that matchup, helping them maintain momentum as they prepare for a tougher stretch of games ahead.

Their next assignment comes on Tuesday night, when they travel to Fenway Park to begin a series against the Boston Red Sox. The matchup will mark another important test for a Phillies team trying to stabilize its season. Entering the series, Philadelphia sits second in the National League East with a 19–22 record through 41 games. While their overall record is below .500, they have shown signs of improvement recently, winning seven of their last ten games. However, their road form remains inconsistent, sitting at 7–10 away from home.
After completing the series in Boston, the Phillies will continue their road trip with a weekend matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Pittsburgh.
In roster news ahead of the Boston series, the Phillies made a move involving veteran outfielder Oscar Mercado. The organization released him from his minor league contract, ending his current stint with the team. Mercado had been playing at the Triple-A level with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, but struggled to find consistent production this season.
In 24 games this year, he hit just .141, collecting 10 hits, one home run, six RBIs, nine runs scored, and three stolen bases. His struggles at the plate marked a decline compared to his previous minor league performance. Last season in Triple-A, he posted stronger numbers, hitting .249 while adding 11 home runs, 40 stolen bases, and a solid on-base presence.
A report from @PHLBaseballNews highlighted his recent struggles, noting his drop in batting average and overall offensive production compared to the previous year. Mercado last appeared in a Major League game during the 2023 season, and since then has been trying to work his way back into MLB consideration through minor league opportunities.
Originally selected in the second round of the 2013 MLB Draft, Mercado has spent time with multiple organizations throughout his career. He began with the Cleveland Guardians, where he played the majority of his early MLB games before later moving on to brief stints with both the Phillies and the St. Louis Cardinals.
Across five Major League seasons and 298 games, the 31-year-old outfielder has compiled a .237 batting average with 211 hits, 26 home runs, 100 RBIs, 123 runs scored, and 29 stolen bases. While not a consistent everyday starter at the MLB level, he has shown flashes of value as a versatile outfielder and speed threat.
One of his standout performances came in May 2023, when he delivered a memorable offensive display that included a three-hit game and five RBIs, matching a personal career high. That performance highlighted the type of impact he can still provide when in form.
Despite his release, Mercado could still attract interest from other teams seeking experienced outfield depth on a low-risk minor league deal, especially given his speed and past MLB experience.
