The No. 1 Auburn Tigers secured the SEC regular-season championship with a dominant 94-78 victory over No. 17 Kentucky on Saturday, marking a historic win in a venue that has long been a challenge for head coach Bruce Pearl.
The Tigers triumphed at Rupp Arena, where they had not won since 1988, making the victory even more significant for Pearl, who has struggled to win in Lexington throughout his coaching career. Aware of his past difficulties, Pearl had a lighthearted response prepared in case Auburn lost.
“My line was going to be that every time Kentucky has a coaching change, my name comes up—but why would they want me when I can’t win in Rupp?” Pearl joked after the game.
He reflected on the challenges his teams have faced in Kentucky, acknowledging the deep basketball culture in the region.

“Having coached in Evansville, Indiana, and Division II for a long time, I know how much people here love high school and college basketball,” Pearl said. “There are no more knowledgeable fans than in Kentucky. I’ve brought great teams here before, and we’ve been dominated.”
Auburn entered the matchup in peak form, while Kentucky has struggled this season, sitting in a three-way tie for eighth place in the SEC at 8-8. Despite the Wildcats’ current struggles, Pearl expressed admiration for the program’s storied history.
“I wanted to bring a team here and play good basketball, to honor the game,” Pearl stated. “We’ve played well here before and still lost, so to win a championship in this building is historic.”
Auburn’s record at Rupp Arena stood at just two wins in 33 attempts before this victory, making the achievement even more special.
“This is what we play for—to make history,” Pearl said. “This is the fifth time in the last eight years that one of our teams has won either a regular-season or tournament title. I’m incredibly proud and happy.”
As Pearl approaches his 65th birthday, he has solidified Auburn’s place as an SEC powerhouse during his decade-long tenure. However, deep success in the NCAA Tournament has remained elusive. Apart from a Final Four run in 2019, the Tigers have not advanced past the second round in four other tournament appearances.
With this team being arguably his strongest yet, Pearl has now conquered Rupp Arena. His next challenge is making a deep NCAA Tournament run and further cementing Auburn’s legacy.
