Breaking: Another Top Veteran Officially Cuts Ties With Philadelphia Phillies Due To….

The Philadelphia Phillies recently made a roster move involving a familiar name, releasing veteran outfielder from their organization. The decision came ahead of their upcoming road series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, following a short homestand where Philadelphia took two out of three games from the Colorado Rockies.

The Phillies had an off day on Monday after finishing that series, which helped them reset before heading into another challenging matchup. Despite some recent momentum, the organization continued to make adjustments to its depth chart, particularly at the minor league level. One of those changes involved parting ways with Mercado, who had been playing on a minor league contract in Triple-A with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

Mercado struggled during his time in the Phillies’ farm system this season. In 24 games with Lehigh Valley, he posted a batting average of just .141, collecting 10 total hits. His production also included one home run, six RBIs, nine runs scored, and three stolen bases. While he showed occasional speed on the bases, his overall offensive output fell well below expectations, which ultimately led to his release.

A social media update from @PHLBaseballNews noted his departure and highlighted his recent decline in production compared to the previous season. In 2023 with Lehigh Valley, Mercado performed much better, hitting .249 while adding a strong on-base presence and defensive value. However, his 2024 performance failed to build on that momentum, as his hitting numbers dropped significantly across all categories.

Mercado’s time in professional baseball spans more than a decade. He was originally selected in the second round of the 2013 MLB Draft, a pick that reflected his early promise as an athletic outfielder with speed and defensive upside. He made his Major League debut with the Cleveland Guardians, where he spent the first portion of his career and developed into a regular contributor for several seasons.

After his stint with Cleveland, Mercado bounced around the league, spending time with the St. Louis Cardinals and later briefly with Philadelphia. Across five MLB seasons and 298 career games, he has compiled a .237 batting average with 211 hits, 26 home runs, 100 RBIs, 123 runs scored, and 29 stolen bases. While his numbers reflect flashes of potential, consistency at the major league level has been a challenge.

One of Mercado’s most notable performances came during a standout game in May 2023, when he delivered a career-tying five-RBI performance, including a bases-loaded hit that helped drive in multiple runs. That type of production showcased what he is capable of when locked in at the plate, though such games have been inconsistent throughout his career.

Despite his release, Mercado could still attract interest from other organizations seeking depth in the outfield. Players with his speed and defensive experience often receive opportunities on minor league deals, especially from teams looking for low-risk additions.

Meanwhile, the Phillies remain focused on their current season. They enter their series against the Red Sox sitting in second place in the National League East with a 19–22 record through 41 games. The team has shown signs of improvement recently, going 7–3 over their last 10 contests, though their road performance remains an area of concern.

Following the series in Boston, Philadelphia will continue their road trip with a matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night, as they look to build more consistency moving forward.
