The Seattle Mariners have made a roster move involving veteran pitcher Randy Dobnak, sending the right-hander to the Kansas City Royals in a trade that provides the Royals with additional pitching depth. Dobnak, 31, is best known for his time with the Minnesota Twins, the only major league team he has pitched for during his MLB career. Although he joined the Mariners organization this season, he was unable to secure a spot on Seattle’s major league roster and spent the year pitching for Triple-A Tacoma.
Throughout his professional career, Dobnak has demonstrated versatility on the mound. He has served as both a starting pitcher and a reliever, filling multiple roles depending on his team’s needs. Over 140.2 innings in the major leagues, he has compiled a 4.86 ERA while appearing in a variety of situations. His career résumé includes 21 starts and two saves, highlighting his ability to adapt to different assignments.
Known for his trademark sports goggles and unconventional pitching style, Dobnak has built a reputation as a crafty competitor who relies on movement, location, and pitch sequencing rather than overpowering velocity. Those characteristics have helped him carve out opportunities at the professional level despite not possessing elite strikeout numbers.
This season with Triple-A Tacoma, Dobnak worked exclusively as a starter and logged 70 innings. During that stretch, he posted a 4.24 ERA while providing stability to the Mariners’ minor league rotation. His performance was solid enough to attract interest from a Royals organization that has been searching for additional pitching depth.
Kansas City’s rotation has faced challenges this season, making Dobnak an intriguing addition. While he may not immediately join the major league roster, his experience and ability to handle a starter’s workload could make him a useful option if injuries or performance issues arise.
The trade generated discussion across social media, with baseball fans and analysts reacting quickly to the news.
