The Colorado Rockies are continuing to search for ways to strengthen their roster, recently making a move aimed at improving bullpen depth by acquiring a former Seattle Mariners pitcher off waivers.
As Colorado works toward becoming more competitive in the tough NL West division, the organization is leaving no stone unturned in its pursuit of under-the-radar talent. Their latest addition reflects that mindset, as they hope to uncover a hidden gem who can contribute at the major league level.
The Rockies officially claimed right-handed pitcher Blas Castano after he was placed on waivers by Seattle. Following the move, Colorado assigned him to their Triple-A affiliate in Albuquerque to continue his development. To make room on the roster, the team designated left-handed pitcher Luis Peralta for assignment.
Castano’s time in the majors has been limited so far. He made just one appearance for the Mariners during the 2025 season, where he struggled, giving up four hits and three earned runs across three innings of work. After that outing, he was quickly sent back down to the minors. However, his early performances in 2026 have been far more encouraging. Through his first six appearances this season, the right-hander has posted an impressive 1.42 ERA while recording four strikeouts against just one walk.
Looking at his broader minor league career, Castano has pitched in 147 games, compiling a 4.44 ERA along with 513 strikeouts and 208 walks. At the Triple-A level specifically, he has appeared in 51 games, registering a 4.96 ERA and a 178-to-76 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Now, he’ll continue his journey in Albuquerque, where the Rockies hope he can maintain his current form.
Pitching at Coors Field is notoriously difficult due to the altitude and hitter-friendly conditions, which often challenge even experienced arms. Despite that, Colorado’s bullpen has performed well so far in 2026, ranking seventh in Major League Baseball with a solid 3.49 ERA among relief units. That success has become a key strength for the team as they aim to stay competitive throughout the season.
For Castano, this opportunity represents a chance to prove he belongs in the big leagues. His strong start to the current campaign clearly caught the Rockies’ attention, and if he continues to deliver consistent performances in Triple-A, a return to the majors could be on the horizon.
