Kansas City Royals Bolster Infield Depth by Signing Nicky Lopez to Minor-League Deal
The Kansas City Royals have added a familiar face to their organization, signing veteran infielder Nicky Lopez to a minor-league contract as they continue to strengthen their infield depth ahead of the final stretch of the season.
The move comes shortly after the Royals promoted Andrew Velazquez to the major league roster following Bobby Witt Jr.’s placement on the injured list due to a back issue. With Velazquez now serving as additional cover at the big-league level, Kansas City acted quickly to replenish its organizational depth by bringing Lopez back into the fold.
Lopez, 30, returns to the Royals after spending time in the Seattle Mariners organization, where he had been playing for Triple-A Tacoma. During his stint with the Rainiers, the veteran infielder showcased solid offensive production, posting an impressive .302 batting average, a .379 on-base percentage, and a .419 slugging percentage across 43 games.
He also contributed two home runs, while displaying excellent plate discipline by drawing 13 walks compared to just 10 strikeouts. His ability to consistently make contact and reach base made him one of Tacoma’s more reliable hitters during the season.
Although Lopez has not appeared in a Major League Baseball game since the 2023 campaign, his recent performances at Triple-A suggest he still has plenty to offer. His experience, defensive versatility, and leadership could prove valuable should the Royals require additional reinforcements later in the season.
Kansas City is no stranger to Lopez, who spent the first several years of his major league career with the organization after making his MLB debut in 2019. During his previous stint with the Royals, he earned a reputation as one of the league’s most dependable defensive infielders, capable of playing multiple positions while providing consistency with the glove.
His best offensive season came in 2021 when he batted .300 and became one of Kansas City’s most reliable everyday players. While his offensive numbers dipped in subsequent seasons, his defensive reliability and baseball IQ continued to make him a valuable contributor.
The Royals’ decision to reunite with Lopez reflects the organization’s desire to maintain experienced depth throughout the roster, especially with injuries affecting key players. Bobby Witt Jr.’s absence has created an immediate need for additional middle-infield options, and Lopez offers an experienced insurance policy if further reinforcements become necessary.
Because the agreement is a minor-league contract, Lopez is expected to report to the Royals’ Triple-A affiliate, where he will continue working toward earning another opportunity at the major league level. If he continues producing offensively while maintaining his trademark defensive consistency, he could place himself firmly in contention for a return to Kansas City before the season concludes.
For the Royals, the signing is a low-risk move with considerable upside. Lopez already understands the organization, coaching philosophy, and expectations, allowing for a smooth transition back into the system.
As Kansas City continues its push through the remainder of the campaign, adding a proven veteran like Lopez provides valuable organizational stability and ensures the club has another experienced option ready should injuries or roster changes create further opportunities.
