The St. Louis Cardinals have placed infielder on the 10-day injured list after he was diagnosed with right elbow lateral epicondylitis, more commonly known as tennis elbow. The move was announced on Tuesday as the team continues to deal with early-season injury concerns across the roster.

Tennis elbow is a condition that causes pain and inflammation around the outside part of the elbow, usually as a result of overuse or repeated stress on the arm. For baseball players, especially infielders who make frequent throws, the injury can become a lingering issue if not properly treated. In Urias’ case, the problem may not be entirely new. During spring training, he missed some time because of what the Cardinals initially described as arm soreness. While the team did not specifically identify the injury back then, it now appears possible that the discomfort was connected to the elbow issue that has resurfaced.
Urias had been trying to play through the pain, but the Cardinals ultimately decided that rest and recovery were necessary. By placing him on the injured list, the organization can give the veteran infielder time to heal without risking further aggravation to the elbow. The timing of his return remains uncertain, and the club has not provided a detailed recovery schedule beyond the minimum 10-day absence.
With Urias sidelined, the Cardinals made a corresponding roster move by recalling Thomas Saggese to the active roster. Saggese now gets another opportunity to contribute at the major league level after spending time developing in the minors. The young infielder is regarded as one of the organization’s promising talents, and his versatility could help fill the temporary gap left by Urias’ absence.
The injury is an unfortunate setback for Urias, who had hoped to provide steady production and defensive reliability for St. Louis this season. Injuries involving throwing arms can be particularly concerning for infielders because even routine defensive plays place stress on the elbow. The Cardinals will likely monitor his progress carefully before clearing him to return to game action.
For now, St. Louis will rely on its infield depth while Urias focuses on rehabilitation and treatment. The club hopes the rest period will allow the inflammation to subside and prevent the condition from becoming a longer-term problem later in the season. Meanwhile, Saggese’s promotion gives the Cardinals a chance to evaluate another young player who could potentially earn a larger role if he performs well during Urias’ absence.
Although the injury is not considered season-ending, the Cardinals will undoubtedly want to proceed cautiously to ensure Urias can fully recover and return to the lineup healthy.
