BREAKING: Sunderland AFC Confirm Departure of Highly Rated Defender Dennis Cirkin After Contract Decision
Sunderland AFC have confirmed the departure of defender Dennis Cirkin, with the left-back leaving the club after his contract situation was resolved. The 24-year-old has now completed a move to Queens Park Rangers on a free transfer, bringing an end to his time with the Black Cats.
Cirkin’s exit marks another change for Sunderland as the club continues to reshape its squad following its return to the Premier League. The defender had been an important part of Sunderland’s rise through the divisions, but his opportunities became more limited after the club reached England’s top flight.
The Irish-born defender enjoyed a particularly productive campaign during Sunderland’s promotion-winning 2024-25 season. He featured 36 times in the Championship and played an important role as the Black Cats secured their return to the Premier League.
However, the following season proved more difficult for Cirkin in terms of regular playing time. He made only nine Premier League appearances as competition for places increased and Sunderland adjusted to the demands of top-flight football.
With his contract situation unresolved, Cirkin eventually became available as a free agent. QPR moved quickly to secure his services, making him their sixth signing of the summer transfer window as they look to improve on their 15th-place finish in the Championship last season.
The move gives Cirkin an opportunity to restart his career and play more regularly. At 24, the defender still has considerable room to develop, while his experience in both the Championship and Premier League makes him an attractive addition for QPR.
Speaking about his decision to join the London club, Cirkin highlighted QPR’s ambition as one of the factors behind his decision.
“They’re very ambitious and that’s something that aligns with me,” the defender said after completing the move.
Cirkin’s football journey began in Dublin before his family moved to London when he was three years old. He subsequently entered the academy system at Tottenham Hotspur, where he developed as a promising young defender.
In August 2021, Sunderland secured his services as the club looked to build a squad capable of competing at the top end of the Championship. Cirkin went on to spend several seasons on Wearside and became a familiar figure for Sunderland supporters.
During his time with the Black Cats, the defender made 126 appearances across competitions and contributed eight goals. His versatility, defensive ability and willingness to support attacks made him a useful option on the left side of the team.
His departure now brings an end to a five-year association with Sunderland. Although he was unable to establish himself as a regular Premier League starter, his contribution during the club’s promotion campaign remains an important part of his legacy at the Stadium of Light.
For QPR, meanwhile, Cirkin represents another significant addition as the club prepares for the new Championship campaign. The London side will be hoping that his previous experience and familiarity with the division can help strengthen their defensive unit.
QPR have not revealed the length of Cirkin’s contract, but the defender will now begin a new chapter in his career at Loftus Road.
For Sunderland, his departure is another indication of the changes taking place within the squad as the club continues to build for the challenges ahead.
