Arthur Masuaku Set to Leave Sunderland for Turkish Side Konyaspor
Arthur Masuaku is reportedly on the verge of leaving Sunderland after reaching an agreement with Turkish club Konyaspor over a permanent transfer.
The experienced defender is expected to bring his time on Wearside to an end after Sunderland gave him permission to explore opportunities away from the club.
Masuaku was considered surplus to requirements at Sunderland following a difficult spell with the club. The 32-year-old spent the second half of the previous season away from the Black Cats after joining French side Lens on loan.
His expected departure now appears to have taken another significant step forward, with Konyaspor emerging as his likely destination.
Masuaku Agrees Deal With Konyaspor
Initial discussions between Masuaku and Konyaspor took place last week after Sunderland granted the player permission to speak with the Turkish club.
Those first negotiations failed to produce an agreement, leaving uncertainty over whether the proposed move would eventually happen.
However, the two sides returned to negotiations over the past 48 hours, and talks have now progressed positively.
Masuaku has reportedly agreed personal terms with Konyaspor and is expected to sign a two-year contract with the Turkish club.
The defender is also expected to travel to Turkey to complete his medical before the transfer can be formally finalized.
If everything goes according to plan, Masuaku will leave Sunderland on a permanent basis and begin another chapter of his long career in Turkish football.
Limited Opportunities at Sunderland
Masuaku joined Sunderland as a free agent last summer, arriving with considerable experience from his previous spells in English and European football.
However, his time at the Stadium of Light did not develop as expected.
The defender made only four senior appearances for Sunderland during the first half of the campaign before being allowed to leave on loan.
His move to Lens provided him with an opportunity to receive regular football and continue his career away from Wearside.
With Sunderland now preparing for the new season, the club appears to have decided that Masuaku no longer forms part of its plans.
His absence from Sunderland’s recent friendly victory over Lens was another indication that his future was likely to lie elsewhere.
Experienced Player Finds New Challenge
Masuaku brings considerable experience to Konyaspor, having played at a high level throughout his career.
The defender has previously featured in the Premier League and has also gained experience in European competitions. His versatility and defensive experience could make him a valuable addition to the Turkish club.
At 32, Masuaku will be hoping that the move provides him with an opportunity to play regularly and demonstrate that he still has plenty to offer at the professional level.
His international experience could also prove valuable. Masuaku was part of the Democratic Republic of Congo squad that competed at the World Cup this summer.
Sunderland Move Forward
For Sunderland, Masuaku’s departure will create additional space within the squad as the club continues to reshape its team.
The Black Cats can now focus on bringing in players who fit the manager’s plans and can contribute to the club’s ambitions during the upcoming campaign.
While Masuaku’s time at Sunderland did not produce the impact supporters may have hoped for when he arrived, his departure appears to be a logical move for both parties.
With a two-year agreement reportedly in place, Arthur Masuaku is now expected to complete his medical and finalize his move to Konyaspor, bringing his Sunderland chapter to an end and opening the door to a fresh challenge in Turkey.
