Sunderland Complete Leo Hjelde Transfer to KV Mechelen After Loan Spell
Sunderland have completed the sale of defender Leo Hjelde, with the 22-year-old Norwegian moving to Belgian Pro League club KV Mechelen on a permanent transfer. The centre-back has agreed to a three-year contract with his new club, bringing his time at the Stadium of Light to an end.
Hjelde arrived at Sunderland in 2024 with expectations that he could become an important part of the club’s defensive plans. However, his time with the Black Cats proved difficult, as he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter. Across his Sunderland career, the defender made only 28 league appearances.
The Norwegian spent the previous campaign away from Sunderland after joining Sheffield United on loan.
