Sunderland Turn Attention to Belgium Star After Grealish Transfer Setback
Sunderland have reportedly identified Lyon winger Malick Fofana as a potential alternative after their hopes of signing Jack Grealish began to fade. With the transfer deadline approaching on Tuesday, the Black Cats are continuing to work on strengthening their squad, particularly in the wide attacking positions.
Grealish had been regarded as one of Sunderland’s preferred targets as the club prepared for their Europa League campaign. The Manchester City forward was viewed as a major attacking addition who could bring experience and creativity to Régis Le Bris’ squad. However, negotiations appear to be becoming increasingly complicated, forcing Sunderland to consider other possibilities.

Igor Paixão remains another player on Sunderland’s shortlist, but discussions with Marseille have reportedly proved difficult. As a result, the Premier League club are now examining the possibility of making a move for Fofana, who could provide another quality option on the left side of the attack.
According to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, Sunderland have begun considering Fofana as they reassess their options in the final days of the transfer window. The Belgian winger has emerged as an interesting candidate as Sunderland attempt to complete their remaining recruitment business before the deadline.
Sunderland’s interest in Grealish had previously been well documented. Reports indicated that the club were exploring the possibility of bringing the England international to the Stadium of Light, with both a loan agreement and a potential permanent transfer being considered.
Grealish’s situation has also attracted interest from Everton, who are keen to bring the player back after his loan spell with the club last season. That competition could make Sunderland’s pursuit even more challenging and may explain why the Black Cats are widening their search for attacking reinforcements.
Fofana, meanwhile, could represent a more achievable target. The 21-year-old Belgium international has established himself as an exciting young winger and could offer Sunderland pace, technical ability and attacking versatility.
Reports have suggested that Fofana would be receptive to the possibility of moving to Sunderland. That willingness could become an important factor if the club decides to make an official approach to Lyon before the transfer deadline.
Sunderland are understood to be targeting at least two more signings before the window closes. A winger and a centre-back are believed to be among the club’s biggest priorities as Le Bris looks to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts.
The potential move for Fofana therefore comes at a crucial moment for Sunderland. While Grealish remains an attractive option, the difficulties surrounding that deal mean the club cannot afford to wait indefinitely.
With the deadline rapidly approaching, Sunderland may have to move quickly if they want to secure their preferred attacking reinforcement. Fofana’s age, international experience and reported openness to the move could make him an increasingly appealing option for the Black Cats as they finalize their squad.
