The Carolina Panthers made another offseason roster move on Thursday, announcing the release of linebacker Jacoby Windmon. The news was first reported by Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer as the Panthers continued adjusting their roster ahead of the upcoming NFL season.
Windmon’s departure ends a short tenure in Carolina that spanned two seasons. Although he was never a full-time starter for the Panthers, the young linebacker managed to carve out a role as a depth defender and special teams contributor whenever opportunities arose. Across nine total appearances with the franchise, Windmon recorded 22 tackles, including 13 solo stops, while also adding 1.5 sacks and two pass deflections.
The former undrafted free agent entered the NFL in 2024 hoping to prove he belonged at the professional level. Despite not hearing his name called during the draft, Windmon earned a chance with the Panthers after impressing coaches with his athleticism, energy, and versatility on defense. Like many undrafted players, his journey to making an NFL roster required overcoming long odds and competing for limited spots during training camp and preseason action.
During his time in Carolina, Windmon showed flashes of potential, particularly as a rotational linebacker capable of contributing in different defensive packages. His ability to pressure the quarterback occasionally stood out, and he displayed solid instincts in limited action. However, the Panthers’ roster competition and the organization’s ongoing defensive adjustments ultimately made it difficult for him to secure a long-term role with the team.
