Braydon Hawthorne has officially confirmed his return to Kentucky Basketball, solidifying his place on the roster ahead of what will be his first active season with the program. The announcement came Tuesday through his Instagram account, putting to rest any lingering questions about his status and signaling his readiness to take on a meaningful role for the Wildcats.
Hawthorne, a highly regarded four-star prospect from the 2025 recruiting class, spent the past season as a redshirt. Although he did not see game action, there was a point during the year when Kentucky considered using him due to a wave of injuries that impacted the roster. Ultimately, the coaching staff chose to preserve his redshirt, allowing him more time to develop and prepare for future contributions.
Standing at 6-foot-8 and weighing around 190 pounds, Hawthorne brings impressive size and versatility to the wing position. During his high school career, he earned recognition as one of the top players in his class, climbing as high as No. 33 nationally in the 247Sports rankings. His combination of length, athleticism, and scoring potential has made him an intriguing piece for Kentucky’s long-term plans.
Back in March, Hawthorne had already indicated in an interview with the Lexington Herald-Leader that he intended to return for the 2026–27 season. Now, with his decision officially finalized, the focus shifts toward how he will fit into the Wildcats’ rotation and what kind of impact he can make in his debut campaign.
Hawthorne’s anticipation for the upcoming season has been evident. Following Kentucky’s NCAA Tournament victory over Santa Clara, he spoke with media members at his locker and shared his excitement about finally getting on the court. He noted that he has been eagerly counting down the days until he can suit up and contribute in a game setting, a moment he has been preparing for throughout his redshirt year.
Looking ahead, Hawthorne is expected to be in the mix for significant playing time right away. One of the key position battles to watch will be at small forward, where he could compete with Kam Williams for a starting role. That competition should help push both players and elevate the overall level of performance at the position.
There is also hope that Kentucky will participate in a summer foreign tour, which would provide an early glimpse of Hawthorne in action.
