Arthur Masuaku Completes Permanent Move From Sunderland to Konyaspor
Sunderland defender Arthur Masuaku has officially completed his permanent transfer to Turkish Super Lig club Konyaspor, bringing his time with the Black Cats to an end.
The experienced left-back leaves Sunderland as a free agent and is understood to have agreed to a two-year contract with Konyaspor. The move represents the next chapter in the 32-year-old’s career after a short spell on Wearside.
Masuaku joined Sunderland last summer after becoming a free agent, arriving with considerable experience from several seasons playing at the highest level. The Democratic Republic of Congo international was expected to provide experience and quality to Sunderland’s squad following his arrival.
During the first half of last season, Masuaku made a number of senior appearances for the Black Cats. However, his involvement with the club changed during the second half of the campaign when he moved to France on loan.
The defender joined Ligue 1 side Lens for the remainder of the season, giving him an opportunity to continue playing regular competitive football away from Sunderland. His temporary move to France meant that his Sunderland career ended sooner than initially expected.
Now, Masuaku has returned to a league he already knows well. His transfer to Konyaspor sees him head back to Turkey, where he previously gained experience playing in the Turkish top flight.
Before joining Sunderland, Masuaku spent time with Besiktas, one of Turkey’s most recognized clubs. His previous experience in the Super Lig should help him settle quickly at Konyaspor as he prepares for another challenge in Turkish football.
Konyaspor will be hoping Masuaku’s experience can strengthen their squad and provide additional quality on the left side of their defense. The club finished ninth in the Turkish top flight last season and will now look to improve on that position during the upcoming campaign.
For Sunderland, Masuaku’s departure represents another change to the squad as the club continues reshaping its playing personnel. With the defender leaving on a free transfer, Sunderland will now need to consider whether his position requires additional reinforcement during the transfer window.
Masuaku’s experience at international level is also expected to be valuable for Konyaspor. The 32-year-old was part of the Democratic Republic of Congo squad at this summer’s World Cup finals, adding another major international tournament experience to his résumé.
His career has already taken him across several countries and major European leagues, and his return to Turkey gives him another opportunity to demonstrate his qualities.
Although his time at Sunderland did not develop into a long-term stay, Masuaku leaves the club with extensive experience and another chapter now beginning in Turkey.
For Konyaspor, the signing provides an opportunity to add an experienced defender to their squad without paying a transfer fee. The two-year agreement will give both player and club time to build a strong relationship as they aim for a successful campaign.
Masuaku will now turn his attention toward settling into his new surroundings, completing preparations with his new teammates and beginning the next stage of his professional career.
Meanwhile, Sunderland will continue working on their own squad plans, with Masuaku’s departure creating another vacancy that could influence their recruitment strategy before the transfer window closes.
