In the football game between Illinois and Kansas, the Orange and Blue benefited from early activity.
Everyone is aware that a game’s atmosphere may be created by a player’s first drive. We would have been behind the eight-ball if the Illini had allowed Kansas to move the ball down the field and score a touchdown on their opening offensive play.
On their first possession of the game, the Jayhawks did get the ball moving early. They reached midfield by running and passing in combination.
Illinois succeeded in forcing quarterback Jalon Daniels of Kansas to attempt a pass down the field on a third-and-eight play. Illinois cornerback Xavier Scott produced an extremely athletic interception on a pass to the left that would have been a first down, changing the game’s momentum early on.
Not just Illinois fans saw this interception, though. Former Illinois football player and current cornerback Devon Witherspoon of the Seattle Seahawks noticed Scott’s spectacular interception on social media.
While playing for the Illinois football program, Xavier Scott had the opportunity to learn from Seattle Seahawks CB Devon Witherspoon. It’s entertaining to watch As Witherspoon acknowledges Scott’s skill. Since he was a unanimous All-American for the Illini and the No. 5 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, he is aware of what makes a great cornerback.
Scott got the opportunity to study under Witherspoon as well. When Witherspoon had his historic season in 2022 at Illinois, it coincided with their time there.
Scott was able to participate in 11 games in 2022 and was fortunate enough to start the bowl game that season due to Witherspoon’s NFL departure.
For most people, learning under Witherspoon is an uncommon experience. Witherspoon’s drive, perseverance, and general skill set are similar to those of Scott. By the time he graduates from Champaign, hopefully, he will have that kind of profession.
