Good News: Oklahoma State QB Garret Rangel Commits To Virginia Tech

Garret Rangel Transfers from Oklahoma State to Virginia Tech, Set to Compete in Crowded QB Room

Quarterback Garret Rangel, previously with Oklahoma State, has officially committed to Virginia Tech as a transfer with two years of eligibility remaining. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound redshirt junior brings with him a mix of experience and potential as he looks to reboot his college football journey in Blacksburg.

Rangel spent three seasons with the Cowboys, appearing in 13 total games. After redshirting in 2022—his freshman season—he saw limited action over the next two years. During his time at Oklahoma State, Rangel completed 93 of 180 pass attempts (51.7%) for 1,075 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also rushed for 107 yards on 41 carries and logged a total of 363 career snaps, with the majority (229) coming during the 2022 season, according to PFF.

Thrown into the spotlight as a true freshman, Rangel stepped in when starter Spencer Sanders went down with an injury. He made an immediate impression, throwing for 304 yards and two touchdowns against Kansas and 229 yards and two more scores in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl versus Wisconsin. However, his role diminished in 2023 as he played behind veteran Alan Bowman. Rangel started the 2023 season opener against Central Arkansas, completing 10 of 15 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown, but saw limited snaps thereafter.

Rangel’s most notable outing in 2024 came in a midseason start against BYU. In that game, he completed 6 of 9 passes for 51 yards and a touchdown, while adding 77 rushing yards on five carries. Unfortunately, his performance was cut short by a broken collarbone following a 54-yard scramble.

Despite the injury, Rangel returned to action during Oklahoma State’s spring game in April, going 5-of-6 for 58 yards. However, after changes to the coaching staff, including offensive coordinator moves by head coach Mike Gundy, Rangel opted to explore other opportunities in the transfer portal. He is one of two quarterbacks to leave the Cowboys this offseason.

By transferring to Virginia Tech, the Frisco, Texas native reunites with Philip Montgomery, the Hokies’ offensive coordinator, who had previously recruited Rangel while he was the head coach at Tulsa. Rangel was a four-star recruit out of Lone Star High School, ranked as the No. 26 quarterback and No. 60 overall player in Texas in the 2022 class. He held offers from major programs including Houston, Northwestern, Utah, and Vanderbilt.

In high school, Rangel threw for 9,333 yards and 101 touchdowns, completing 594 of 862 passes. He also showcased his athleticism as a three-sport athlete, participating in basketball and track & field.

At Virginia Tech, Rangel becomes the 29th transfer addition of the offseason and the first quarterback in that group. He joins a QB room featuring Kyron Drones, Pop Watson, and freshmen A.J. Brand and Kelden Ryan. While Drones is the expected starter for 2025, Rangel is likely to compete with Watson for the backup role and could contend for the starting job in 2026 once Drones departs.
