Done Deal: Another Michigan Wolverine Stand Out Star Signs For Detroit Lions

The New Orleans Saints are adding depth and upside to their roster with the signing of former Michigan standout Chase Winovich, following his brief stint with the Detroit Lions. The move signals a low-risk, high-reward gamble by the Saints, who continue to search for reinforcements on defense ahead of training camp.

Winovich, a third-round pick by the New England Patriots in the 2019 NFL Draft, made a name for himself at Michigan as one of the Big Ten’s most disruptive edge defenders. Known for his relentless motor, fiery competitiveness, and flowing blonde hair, Winovich finished his collegiate career with 18.5 sacks and 43 tackles for loss across four seasons. He earned All-Big Ten honors twice and served as a vocal leader on Jim Harbaugh’s defense.

His NFL journey began promisingly, as he recorded 5.5 sacks in his rookie season with the Patriots and added another 5.5 in 2020. However, a hamstring injury derailed his 2021 campaign, limiting his impact and playing time. He was traded to the Cleveland Browns in 2022 and later signed a short-term deal with the Lions in 2023, but was released before the start of the season after an underwhelming preseason.

Now, the 29-year-old edge rusher lands in New Orleans with a chance to compete for a rotational role on a Saints defensive line that has undergone some changes in recent years. With the departure of several veterans and the continued development of young players like Payton Turner and Carl Granderson, Winovich could find himself in the mix if he recaptures his early-career form.

For the Saints, the signing carries minimal financial risk and plenty of potential upside. If Winovich can stay healthy and carve out a niche as a situational pass rusher, New Orleans may have found a valuable addition without breaking the bank.

As training camp approaches, all eyes will be on whether the former Wolverine can reignite his NFL career in t

he Big Easy.
