It’s early, yes. But through just a few weeks of the college football season, South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers has Gamecock Nation buzzing and it’s not just idle talk anymore. After a string of explosive performances, “LaNorris Sellers for Heisman” is gaining real traction. And to the surprise of many, South Carolina doesn’t seem interested in downplaying the hype.
The redshirt freshman has burst onto the SEC scene with a rare blend of arm talent, poise, and playmaking ability. Sellers has accounted for over 1,200 total yards and 13 touchdowns through the season’s first five games, carving up defenses with both his legs and a surprisingly polished passing game. Against a top-15 Tennessee team, Sellers threw for 312 yards and 4 touchdowns while adding 87 on the ground putting him squarely in the national spotlight.
“Every time he steps on the field, something electric happens,” said head coach Shane Beamer. “He’s the real deal, and we’re going to ride with him as far as he’ll take us.”
Sellers’ emergence comes at a crucial time for the Gamecocks, who were seeking a new identity after Spencer Rattler’s departure. With Sellers at the helm, South Carolina’s offense looks more dynamic than it has in years. National media have started taking notice, with ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit recently saying Sellers is “a name to remember in the Heisman conversation if South Carolina keeps winning.”
The school’s marketing team has also leaned into the excitement, launching a subtle #SellersFor7Heisman campaign on social media and rolling out highlights that rival any player in the country.
Still, Sellers remains humble. “The Heisman? That’s not what I’m focused on,” he said following Saturday’s win. “I just want to win games and make my team better.”
Even so, the whispers are growing louder. And if Sellers continues this trajectory, South Carolina might just find itself hosting Heisman voters in December.
