Breaking News: Insider, Spurs Reportedly On The Verge Of Releasing Highly Rated Sensational Talent Sochan Due To Mitch Johnson Confirming He’s Not Part Of His Plans

In a shocking development that has left fans and analysts stunned, the San Antonio Spurs are reportedly on the verge of releasing young forward Jeremy Sochan, one of the most highly rated prospects on their roster. The news comes after newly elevated head coach Mitch Johnson confirmed behind closed doors  and now through league sources  that Sochan is not part of his long-term plans for the franchise.

Sochan, a versatile and energetic player known for his elite defensive upside and unorthodox offensive style, was selected 9th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft. He quickly became a fan favorite in San Antonio due to his hustle, defensive instincts, and willingness to embrace multiple roles on the court. The Polish-born forward averaged 11.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.6 assists during the 2023–24 season, often acting as a Swiss Army knife in Gregg Popovich’s system.

However, with Popovich stepping back and Johnson taking the reins full-time heading into the 2025 season, it appears Sochan’s fit with the team’s new system is in serious question. Johnson is said to favor a more structured offensive flow centered around star big man Victor Wembanyama and newly signed pieces like Steven Adams and Naz Reid, both of whom bring experience and size to the frontcourt.

“While Jeremy is a phenomenal talent and competitor, we’re heading in a different direction in terms of team composition and identity,” Johnson reportedly told members of the Spurs’ front office, according to sources close to the situation. The Spurs are now exploring trade options but are also prepared to part ways with Sochan via release if a suitable deal doesn’t materialize quickly.

Releasing Sochan would be a significant move and a rare instance of a team moving on from a young, lottery-level talent this early in his career. Rival teams are closely monitoring the situation, and there’s already buzz that the Oklahoma City Thunder and Toronto Raptors have interest.

For Spurs fans, the potential departure of Sochan is bittersweet  a reminder that the rebuild around Wembanyama may come with painful decisions. As the franchise charts a new course under Johnson, one thing is clear: no one’s place is guaranteed, not even rising stars.
