A tragic accident has rocked the Italian sporting community, as former youth tennis prodigy Tobias Tappeiner once a regular rival of world tennis star Jannik Sinner has died in a devastating car crash at the age of 24.
The fatal incident occurred early on Sunday, June 15, 2025, along the A22 motorway near Bolzano in northern Italy. According to reports, Tappeiner mistakenly entered the wrong carriageway, resulting in a head-on collision with a minivan carrying a family of five. Tappeiner died on impact. The family, which included two adults and three children aged 8, 11, and 14, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals by emergency crews. All five are expected to survive but are being treated for trauma and physical injuries.
Tappeiner, who hailed from South Tyrol, was widely regarded in local tennis circles for his early career achievements. As a junior player, he frequently competed against Jannik Sinner—now a Grand Slam champion and a top-five ATP star. In fact, Tappeiner famously defeated Sinner in an under-12 tournament final, a result that once marked him as one of Italy’s most promising young talents. While Sinner ascended to global stardom, Tappeiner transitioned to a coaching role, dedicating himself to training young players in Bolzano and helping manage his father’s tennis academy.
“Tobias was a kind soul off the court and a lion on it,” said Stefan Laimer, sports director at TC Bolzano, where Tappeiner had been coaching. “He had the heart of a champion and gave so much to our club and the next generation of players.”
The news has sparked a wave of grief across the Italian tennis community, with many expressing condolences to both the Tappeiner family and the injured family involved in the crash. Club members, former rivals, and friends have remembered him as a driven athlete with immense potential, a loyal friend, and an inspiring mentor to young players.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the crash, trying to determine how and why Tappeiner entered the wrong lane on the highway. In the meantime, tributes continue to pour in from across the region, as the sport mourns the loss of a bright and compassionate figure taken far too soon.
