Spurs chair Peter J. Holt talks financial plans for new arena in San Antonio

Long-Term Vision Includes Public-Private Partnership and Expanded Community Impact.

San Antonio Spurs chairman Peter J. Holt has shed light on the franchise’s long-term financial strategy surrounding the proposed development of a new state-of-the-art arena in San Antonio. With the Spurs looking to modernize their facilities and deepen their roots in the city, Holt emphasized a vision that balances innovation, fiscal responsibility, and community involvement.

In a recent media session, Holt made it clear that while the plans for a new arena are still in early stages, the organization is committed to remaining in San Antonio for the long haul and sees the future venue as a critical part of that commitment.

“We are exploring options that benefit both the franchise and the people of San Antonio,” Holt said. “This isn’t just about basketball. It’s about creating a space that energizes our community and brings long-term value.”

The Spurs are reportedly evaluating funding models that could involve a public-private partnership, similar to those used for recent arena developments in markets like Sacramento and Milwaukee. While no formal request for public funding has been submitted, early discussions are underway with city officials, local business leaders, and potential investors.

The current AT\&T Center, which opened in 2002, has served the team well, but with advancements in fan experience technology and the growing demand for mixed-use venues, Holt believes the time is approaching for an upgrade.

“There’s a responsibility to keep up with the evolving expectations of our fans while creating a destination that brings year-round economic and cultural benefits to San Antonio,” Holt added.

Holt also hinted that any future project would aim to incorporate multi-use infrastructure, including retail, hospitality, and entertainment features that can generate economic activity beyond game days. The organization is also expected to prioritize sustainability and accessibility in the design process.

Though no timeline has been finalized, the Spurs’ leadership continues to work closely with Bexar County and local stakeholders to ensure transparency and community input. As San Antonio grows and the NBA evolves, a new arena could be a transformative step for both the franchise and the city it calls home.

For now, Spurs fans can take comfort in the fact that the team’s leadership is not only planning for the future but doing so with San Antonio at the center of the vision.
