A highly regarded tight end pledges to Texas A&M after rejecting the Texas Longhorns.

Texas A&M is poised to add an experienced and highly regarded tight end through the transfer portal, as UTSA standout Houston Thomas is expected to commit to the Aggies. According to a report from CBS Sports insider Matt Zenitz, the veteran pass-catcher will finish his college career back in his hometown, bringing both familiarity and production to College Station.

Thomas’ path to this moment has been a steady climb marked by patience and development. A member of UTSA’s 2022 recruiting class, he played his high school football at College Station High School, just minutes away from Kyle Field. Despite growing up in the Aggies’ backyard, Thomas chose to begin his college career with the Roadrunners, a decision that allowed him to develop gradually while earning his role in the offense.

His freshman season was spent largely on the sidelines, as Thomas redshirted and appeared in just four games, recording a single reception. Rather than transferring early or becoming discouraged, he stayed the course, and that patience began to pay off in 2023. During that season, Thomas saw an expanded role, finishing with nine catches for 101 yards as he became more involved in UTSA’s passing attack.

The real breakout came in 2024, when Thomas emerged as one of the Roadrunners’ most reliable offensive weapons. He hauled in 34 receptions for 470 yards and three touchdowns, showcasing his ability to stretch the field and make plays after the catch. Notably, he scored his first career touchdown against Rice, a milestone that symbolized his growing confidence and importance within the offense. His strong performance that season firmly put him on the radar as a potential Power Four transfer candidate.

Thomas followed that up with another productive campaign in 2025. While his yardage total dipped slightly, he again recorded 34 catches, this time for 307 yards, and added two more touchdowns. By the end of his four-year run at UTSA, Thomas had established himself as a dependable, experienced tight end with proven receiving ability and the maturity that comes from significant game reps.

Now, with one season of eligibility remaining, Thomas is set to bring his talents back home. His reported decision to transfer to Texas A&M comes at an ideal time for the Aggies, who are building strong momentum under head coach Mike Elko. The 2025 season marked a historic milestone for the program, as Texas A&M reached the College Football Playoff for the first time, signaling a new era of national relevance and competitiveness.

From a roster standpoint, the timing also makes sense. Tight end is shaping up to be a position of need for Texas A&M heading into the 2026 season, as both Nate Boerkircher and Amari Niblack have exhausted their eligibility. While Theo Melin Öhrström is expected to return, the Aggies were clearly in the market for an experienced option who could contribute immediately, both as a pass-catcher and a veteran presence.

Thomas fits that profile well. His familiarity with the area, combined with his steady progression at UTSA, positions him as a potential impact addition who can help stabilize and strengthen the Aggies’ offense. If the reported commitment becomes official, Texas A&M will be gaining not just a talented tight end, but a homegrown player eager to make his final college season count in front of family, friends, and the fans he grew up around.
