Pettiford, who came to Auburn as a highly regarded five-star prospect out of New Jersey, has already made a strong impact in his college career. As a freshman, he played a key role on an Auburn team that captured an SEC championship and made a run to the Final Four. Even though he came off the bench that season, he provided a spark with his scoring, playmaking, and poise, averaging 11.6 points and 3.0 assists per game. His ability to contribute in big moments quickly showed why he was considered one of the top recruits in his class.
This past season, Pettiford stepped into an even larger role as Auburn’s starting point guard. While his shooting efficiency dipped compared to the previous year, he still proved to be one of the team’s most valuable players. He led the Tigers in assists with 3.8 per game and finished as the team’s second-leading scorer, underscoring how much Auburn relied on him to run the offense and create opportunities. His overall production remained strong, and his expanded responsibilities showed his importance as a leader in the backcourt.
In addition to his offensive contributions, Pettiford also made strides on the defensive end. Auburn coach Bruce Pearl praised the improvement in his defense, a sign that Pettiford is continuing to round out his game. That growth is especially important for a point guard, a position that often sets the tone on both ends of the floor. His development into a more complete player makes his return even more valuable for Auburn as it prepares for next season.
Pettiford’s future has been a topic of discussion before. Last year, he considered leaving for the NBA and went through part of the draft evaluation process before ultimately deciding to return to college. This time, however, his professional outlook does not appear to be as strong, and reports indicate that playing another season in college had been part of his plan for a while. The only real question was whether he would stay at Auburn or explore another option, and he has now made it clear that Auburn is where he wants to be.
His decision adds stability to the Tigers’ roster. Another important backcourt player, Kevin Overton, has also announced that he will return for his senior year. Even so, Auburn is still expected to look for additional help at point guard through the transfer portal after freshman Kaden Magwood chose to transfer. Still, bringing Pettiford back gives Auburn an experienced playmaker, proven scorer, and familiar leader, making his return one of the biggest wins of the offseason for the Tigers.
