Auburn Strengthens Frontcourt with Addition of 7-Foot Transfer Bukky Oboye
Auburn basketball is taking significant steps to improve its interior presence after struggling with rim protection last season. In an effort to address that weakness, the Tigers have secured a major addition through the transfer portal, officially bringing in Santa Clara big man Bukky Oboye. The move, confirmed on April 17, adds size, athleticism, and defensive potential to Auburn’s frontcourt heading into the new season.
Standing at an imposing 7-foot-1, Oboye immediately becomes one of the tallest players on Auburn’s roster. He will join fellow seven-footer Narcisse Nogy, an international recruit, giving the Tigers a rare combination of size that could transform their defensive identity. As a rising redshirt junior, Oboye is expected to have two years of eligibility remaining, providing Auburn with both immediate impact and future stability in the paint.
Head coach Steven Pearl expressed strong enthusiasm about Oboye’s arrival, highlighting not only his physical attributes but also his continuous development as a player. He redshirted his freshman year after appearing in just two games and saw action in only 27 games across those initial years. However, his role expanded significantly in his third season, where he emerged as a consistent contributor and earned a starting position in all 34 games for the Broncos.
That breakout season showcased Oboye’s potential. He averaged 7.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game, numbers that reflect his ability to contribute offensively while also protecting the rim defensively. His efficiency as a scorer was particularly noteworthy. He shot an impressive 66.7 percent from the field, demonstrating strong finishing ability close to the basket. Even more remarkable, he led the nation in two-point field goal percentage at 77.3 percent, underlining his effectiveness in high-percentage scoring situations.
Oboye’s presence is expected to address a critical need for Auburn. Last season, the Tigers struggled at times to defend the paint and contest shots effectively.
