Done Deal: Just In Kentucky secures Another crucial transfer portal win with a highly rated 5-Star point guard commitment

Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball head coach Mark Pope has landed another major addition from the transfer portal, as guard Alex Wilkins officially commits to the program. The move gives Kentucky a significant boost in the backcourt and follows closely after the recent pledge from Zoom Diallo, forming what could become one of the most dynamic guard duos in the SEC.

Wilkins arrives after a standout season with the Furman Paladins, where he established himself as a high-level scoring threat. He averaged 18 points per game while shooting an efficient 46 percent from the field, numbers that quickly drew interest from several top programs across the country. His ability to create offense consistently made him one of the more sought-after guards in the portal.

Despite strong competition—particularly from Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball led by Nate Oats—Kentucky ultimately secured his commitment. This continues a growing trend of recruiting wins for Pope against major rivals, reinforcing the program’s momentum on the recruiting trail.

Wilkins is expected to slot into the shooting guard role, complementing Diallo’s skill set. Together, they bring a balanced mix of scoring, playmaking, and versatility that should elevate Kentucky’s offensive production. Beyond his scoring, Wilkins also contributed across the board last season, averaging nearly five assists and about one steal per game, highlighting his all-around impact.

One of his most notable performances came on the national stage, when he scored 21 points against UConn Huskies men’s basketball in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. That outing further demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure and against elite competition.

What makes this addition even more valuable is Wilkins’ potential. Entering just his second collegiate season, he still has considerable room for growth, giving Kentucky both immediate production and long-term upside. Players with his profile—productive, versatile, and still developing—are typically targeted by major programs later in their careers, making this an especially timely pickup for the Wildcats.

With back-to-back commitments from Diallo and Wilkins, Kentucky has effectively addressed one of its biggest weaknesses from the previous season: backcourt consistency and scoring. The duo provides a strong foundation for the roster as Pope continues to shape the team heading into the 2026–27 campaign.

Attention will now likely shift toward strengthening the frontcourt, but the pressure has eased significantly. Kentucky’s guard play, once a concern, now looks like a clear strength. If both players meet expectations, this revamped backcourt could play a central role in what is shaping up to be a promising season for the Wildcats.
