With ace pitcher Zack Wheeler nearing his return, the Philadelphia Phillies are expected to make some important roster decisions, particularly regarding the future of Taijuan Walker. Wheeler, a key figure in Philadelphia’s rotation, is scheduled to complete his final rehab start and could rejoin the team as early as next week. His return would likely force a reshuffling of the pitching staff, putting Walker’s role—and possibly his time with the organization—in doubt.
In a recent mock trade scenario, it was suggested that the Phillies could strike a deal with the Houston Astros. The proposed trade would involve sending Walker, along with two of the Phillies’ top 15 prospects, to Houston in exchange for All-Star infielder Isaac Paredes. The idea behind the move is simple: Philadelphia could benefit from adding another impactful bat, while Houston is in need of pitching depth, even if Walker has struggled.
Walker signed a four-year, $72 million contract prior to the 2023 season, but his performance has not lived up to expectations. This year, his struggles have been especially noticeable. In just under 19 innings pitched, he has posted an ERA above 9.00 while allowing six home runs and 19 earned runs. Looking at his broader tenure with the Phillies, Walker has recorded a 5.08 ERA across nearly 400 innings, numbers that have raised concerns about his long-term fit with the team. With his recent performances trending in the wrong direction, it has become increasingly difficult for the coaching staff to rely on him in meaningful situations.
Given those challenges, moving Walker in a trade could be an appealing option. However, his contract presents a potential obstacle, as not many teams may be willing to take on the remaining salary. The Phillies could address this by agreeing to cover a portion of the money owed, making the deal more attractive to potential trade partners. Team president Dave Dombrowski has shown in the past that he is willing to make bold moves if it improves the roster, so such a scenario would not be surprising.
From the Phillies’ perspective, acquiring Paredes could provide a much-needed boost to the offense. While players like Alec Bohm and Bryson Stott have shown promise, both have struggled at times this season. Paredes, on the other hand, brings a stronger power profile and has the potential to hit 25 to 30 home runs over a full season. Even though he has gotten off to a slow start this year, his track record suggests he could still be a valuable addition to the lineup. His versatility would also allow the Phillies to move him around the infield or use him as a designated hitter when needed.
For the Astros, the deal could address their pitching concerns while also adding promising young talent to their system. Including prospects in the trade would increase the likelihood of Houston engaging in serious discussions, especially if they view Paredes as a movable asset.
Ultimately, if Wheeler returns as expected, Walker’s role will likely diminish, potentially shifting him to the bullpen. However, given his current struggles and limited trust in high-pressure situations, a trade may be the most practical solution for both sides. If Philadelphia can successfully acquire a player like Paredes in return, it would represent a significant upgrade and a strategic move as they aim to strengthen their roster for the remainder of the season.
