Auburn men’s basketball has officially strengthened its future backcourt with the signing of guard George Kimble III, a skilled and versatile combo guard who brings both scoring ability and defensive intensity to the program. Kimble is set to join the Tigers for the 2026–27 season after a winding but impressive collegiate journey that has tested his resilience and growth as a player.

Kimble spent the previous season at Vanderbilt University after beginning his career at Eastern Kentucky. However, his time at EKU was cut short when he suffered a knee injury late in the 2024–25 season. Before that setback, he was having a standout year, averaging 18.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.2 assists across 25 games, establishing himself as one of the most productive guards in his conference.
Auburn head coach Steven Pearl expressed strong excitement about the addition, emphasizing Kimble’s mindset and determination as key reasons for the program’s interest. According to Pearl, Auburn’s culture is built around players who carry a chip on their shoulder and use adversity as motivation, and Kimble fits that identity well.
Born in Tampa, Florida, Kimble comes from an athletic background, as he is the cousin of Olympic sprinting star Justin Gatlin. His basketball journey began at Eckerd College, a Division II program, where he quickly made an impact. In his freshman season, he earned Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year honors after averaging 19.4 points, 4.6 assists, and 3.1 rebounds per game, showing early signs of his scoring instincts and playmaking skills.
After his successful start at Eckerd, Kimble moved up to Eastern Kentucky, where he continued to develop as a high-level guard before his injury interrupted his momentum. Despite the setback, he remained focused on his development. During his time at Vanderbilt following recovery, he dedicated himself to improving physically and mentally, spending significant time in the weight room and sharpening his understanding of the game.
Coach Pearl highlighted Kimble’s toughness and two-way ability as major assets for Auburn. He pointed out that one of the guard’s most valuable traits is his defensive presence, noting that he ranked among the national leaders in steals during a previous season, despite playing a limited number of games. His ability to pressure opposing guards and disrupt offensive rhythm makes him an ideal fit for Auburn’s defensive system.
Offensively, Kimble adds another dynamic option to an already competitive backcourt that includes returning players Tahaad Pettiford and Kevin Overton. Rather than avoiding competition for playing time, Kimble is embracing the challenge, viewing it as an opportunity to grow and elevate both himself and his teammates.
Auburn’s coaching staff believes this internal competition will strengthen the entire roster. The program values players who are willing to compete at a high level every day, and Kimble’s arrival is expected to raise the standard in practice and in games.
With Kimble joining a 2026–27 signing class that includes a diverse group of talent across multiple positions, Auburn continues to build a balanced and competitive roster. As he prepares for the next step in his career, Kimble represents both a proven scorer and a determined competitor eager to make his mark at the SEC level.
