Seattle Mariners will temporarily be without one of the most reliable arms in their bullpen after reliever José A. Ferrer was placed on the paternity list ahead of the team’s series opener against the Houston Astros in Houston.

The move comes for a joyful personal reason, as Ferrer and his wife are welcoming the birth of their child. While the Mariners are excited for Ferrer and his growing family, the club will undoubtedly feel his absence over the next few games given the important role he has played in Seattle’s bullpen this season.
To fill the roster spot, Seattle recalled right-handed pitcher Domingo Gonzalez from Triple-A Tacoma. Under Major League Baseball rules, players on the paternity list are allowed to miss up to three days, meaning Ferrer could potentially rejoin the team before Thursday’s afternoon finale at Daikin Park if everything goes according to schedule.
Even though his absence is expected to be short-term, Ferrer has become such an important piece of Seattle’s bullpen that any time away creates a noticeable void. The left-hander has quietly developed into one of the team’s most dependable high-leverage relievers and has consistently delivered strong performances throughout the season.
Ferrer currently owns a stellar 1.80 ERA across 21 appearances while striking out 16 batters and issuing only three walks over 90 hitters faced. His effectiveness has made him one of the most efficient bullpen options on the Mariners’ roster, especially in pressure-filled situations late in games.
Although Ferrer experienced a few rough moments during April, many around the organization believed poor batted-ball luck played a major role in those struggles rather than any significant decline in performance. Since then, he has settled into a groove and become a stabilizing force for Seattle’s relief corps.
One of Ferrer’s most memorable outings of the season came last week against the Atlanta Braves when he recorded a gritty save after pitching on three consecutive days. That appearance highlighted both his durability and the confidence the Mariners coaching staff has developed in him during key moments.
Seattle’s bullpen as a whole has been one of the better units in baseball this season. Entering the Houston series, Mariners relievers carried a combined 3.41 ERA, ranking seventh-best in Major League Baseball. However, the bullpen has recently dealt with several challenges that make Ferrer’s temporary absence even more significant.
Closer Andrés Muñoz, a two-time All-Star, has shown flashes of dominance but has also worked through some inconsistency during the early part of the season. Muñoz has already been charged with three losses in 16 appearances, leading to increased pressure on the rest of Seattle’s relief options.
In addition, the Mariners are already missing important bullpen contributors due to injuries. Reliever Matt Brash remains sidelined with a right lat strain, while left-hander Gabe Speier is dealing with inflammation in his left shoulder. Those injuries have forced Seattle to rely heavily on healthy bullpen arms like Ferrer throughout the season.
Despite the temporary setback, the Mariners understand the significance of Ferrer’s family moment and are expected to welcome him back once his brief leave concludes. In the meantime, Seattle will hope its bullpen can continue producing strong performances as the club battles through an important road series against a division rival.
