Breaking: Cardinals Set to Cut Ties With Fan Favorite Amid Defensive Concerns

St. Louis Cardinals may still be evaluating their direction for the remainder of the season, but one thing is becoming increasingly clear after the first 40 games: several playoff contenders are expected to show serious interest in reliever Riley O’Brien ahead of the trade deadline.

The Cardinals recently completed what has arguably been the toughest stretch of their season so far. Over a demanding span of 16 games in 17 days, St. Louis managed to post a respectable 9-7 record against strong competition that included the Seattle Mariners, Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers, and San Diego Padres. Every opponent during that stretch entered the series above .500 and firmly involved in postseason contention.

Despite holding their own against quality teams, the Cardinals still appear committed to the long-term organizational vision being developed under baseball executive Chaim Bloom. Because the franchise is focused on rebuilding and strengthening its future foundation, there is growing belief that St. Louis may avoid aggressively pursuing veteran upgrades at the trade deadline.

Instead, league executives are expected to monitor which Cardinals players could become available in trade discussions, and O’Brien is quickly emerging as one of the club’s most valuable trade assets.

Although O’Brien suffered a blown save against San Diego on Sunday, his overall performance this season has been highly impressive. Through 19 appearances, the hard-throwing reliever owns a 3-1 record with a 2.84 ERA while collecting 11 saves. His save total trails only a handful of top closers around baseball and has helped establish him as one of the more effective late-inning relievers in the National League.

His combination of power pitching and consistency has likely caught the attention of several teams looking to strengthen their bullpens for a postseason run. Closers and high-leverage relievers traditionally become some of the most sought-after players near the trade deadline, especially when contenders are searching for dependable bullpen help.

What makes O’Brien even more attractive is the amount of team control remaining on his contract. He is under club control through 2026, giving any acquiring team the potential benefit of more than just a short-term rental. That additional value could allow the Cardinals to seek a significant return package that includes multiple young prospects.

For Bloom, a potential O’Brien trade would also represent an opportunity to avoid mistakes that have frustrated Cardinals fans in recent years. Former president of baseball operations John Mozeliak faced criticism for waiting too long to move former closer Ryan Helsley when his trade value was at its peak. As Helsley’s market cooled, St. Louis missed a chance to maximize the return for one of its most valuable relievers.

The Cardinals now face a similar situation with O’Brien, though the circumstances may favor action this time around. At 31 years old, O’Brien is pitching some of the best baseball of his career, but there is no guarantee that level of production will continue long term. If St. Louis truly intends to prioritize the future and create opportunities for younger players, moving O’Brien while his value is extremely high could make strategic sense.

As the trade deadline approaches, O’Brien’s name will likely continue generating speculation around the league. Whether the Cardinals ultimately decide to move him or keep him in the bullpen, his strong start to the season has already made him one of the organization’s most discussed trade candidates.
