BREAKING: Phillies Cut Ties With Veteran Outfielder After Very Brief Reunion

The Philadelphia Phillies have recently found themselves moving in the right direction after making a significant change within the coaching staff. Since former bench coach Don Mattingly stepped into the managerial role following the departure of longtime skipper Rob Thomson, the Phillies have shown noticeable improvement on the field.

Philadelphia has won four consecutive series under Mattingly’s leadership, and several aspects of the team’s performance have started trending upward. The starting pitching rotation has looked more consistent, while multiple players throughout the lineup appear to be regaining confidence and rhythm at the plate.

One of the most notable examples has been infielder Alec Bohm. After struggling offensively for a stretch, Bohm reportedly received advice from Mattingly to step away from hitting activities for a few days to mentally reset. The short break appeared to benefit him, as he returned to the lineup showing improved production and a more comfortable approach at the plate.

Outfielder Brandon Marsh has also flourished during the team’s recent turnaround. Following strong public support from Mattingly, Marsh has elevated his game dramatically and currently sits among the league’s best hitters by batting average. His resurgence has given the Phillies another important offensive contributor during their recent winning stretch.

While Philadelphia has benefited from improvements at the major league level, the organization also made a roster decision involving a familiar veteran outfielder. The Phillies officially released Oscar Mercado from their Triple-A affiliate, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, ending what turned out to be a short-lived reunion between the two sides.

Mercado had signed a minor league contract with Philadelphia earlier this year after spending spring training with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. During preseason action with Arizona, the veteran outfielder appeared in limited opportunities and posted a .242 batting average with a .265 on-base percentage and .333 slugging percentage before eventually joining the Phillies system once again.

The move to bring Mercado back to Lehigh Valley made sense at the time because he had previously delivered solid production for the IronPigs. During the 2025 season, Mercado quietly put together one of the better campaigns of his professional career at the Triple-A level. In 115 games and 477 plate appearances, he batted .249 while posting a .369 on-base percentage and a .373 slugging mark. He also hit 11 home runs, stole 40 bases, and demonstrated excellent plate discipline by walking more frequently than he struck out.

That productive season appeared to leave a positive impression on the Phillies front office and coaching staff, leading to another opportunity within the organization. However, despite his prior success in the minors, the Phillies ultimately decided to move in a different direction as they continue adjusting their roster depth.

Mercado’s history with Philadelphia actually dates back further than last season. He previously spent time with the organization in 2022, although his opportunity at the major league level was extremely brief. He appeared in only one game for the Phillies that season, recording a single at-bat.

Before joining Philadelphia, Mercado spent several years with the Cleveland Guardians, where he experienced the most successful stretch of his MLB career. Across five major league seasons, Mercado has compiled a .237 batting average with a .289 on-base percentage and .388 slugging percentage while playing all three outfield positions.

Although he showed promise early in his career, particularly during his impressive rookie season in 2019, Mercado was never fully able to build on that momentum. During that standout rookie campaign with Cleveland, he hit .269 with 15 home runs and 15 stolen bases over 115 games, flashing the athleticism and versatility that once made him one of the organization’s more intriguing young players.

Since then, however, consistent opportunities and production at the major league level have been harder to come by. Mercado has not appeared in an MLB game since the 2023 season, and his latest release by the Phillies suggests the club no longer views him as part of its future outfield depth plans.

Even so, Mercado’s track record as a productive Triple-A player and experienced major league outfielder could still attract interest from another organization looking for veteran depth. At 31 years old, he may yet receive another opportunity to continue his professional baseball career elsewhere.
