Good News: Auburn Gets 2027 Commitment From Viral QB With ‘Cannon’ Arm

The Auburn Tigers football program has endured several difficult seasons, and describing the team’s recent struggles as disappointing might even be an understatement. Since finishing with a winning record in 2020, the Tigers have slipped into irrelevance within the highly competitive Southeastern Conference, leaving many fans frustrated and searching for signs of hope for the future.

That optimism may finally be arriving with the start of a new era in 2026 under first-year head coach Alex Golesh. Auburn has already begun rebuilding through recruiting, and one of the biggest additions to its future plans is Class of 2027 quarterback Gary Chatman Jr., who recently committed to the Tigers.

Chatman, listed at 6-foot and around 190 pounds, has quickly become one of the more talked-about young quarterbacks in high school football. Much of the excitement surrounding him has come from viral workout clips circulating online, where his arm strength immediately stood out. Videos showing him effortlessly firing deep passes with tight spirals generated widespread attention across social media platforms.

NFL personality Dov Kleiman even highlighted the young quarterback on X, praising Chatman’s powerful throwing ability and describing his passes as having a “picture-perfect spiral.” Those comments only increased the buzz surrounding Auburn’s newest commitment.

Chatman officially announced his commitment to Auburn on May 9, sharing his excitement publicly on social media. The talented quarterback will play his senior season at Brookwood High School in Snellville this fall before eventually making the move to Auburn. During his first season as a starting quarterback in 2025, Chatman produced impressive numbers despite facing adversity. He threw for 1,494 yards with 12 touchdown passes and only four interceptions in 10 games. In addition to his passing ability, he showcased dangerous mobility by rushing for 418 yards and five touchdowns while averaging nearly 12 yards per carry.

Chatman’s dual-threat skills are a major reason recruiting analysts believe he has enormous upside. His strong arm is obvious, but his athleticism and ability to escape pressure make him especially dangerous. He was previously committed to Wake Forest Demon Deacons football before deciding to flip his pledge to Auburn. Other schools that extended scholarship offers included Iowa State Cyclones football, West Virginia Mountaineers football, and Liberty Flames football.

According to reports from local media in Georgia, Chatman also possesses elite speed. He has reportedly run the 40-yard dash in as little as 4.49 seconds, a remarkable time for a quarterback. Even after suffering a broken collarbone early in the season that limited his rushing opportunities and caused him to miss games, he still managed to lead Brookwood to the state playoffs.

Recruiting analyst Andrew Ivins of 247Sports also offered strong praise for Chatman before his commitment announcement. Ivins described him as a gritty dual-threat quarterback with excellent pocket awareness who can make difficult throws while under pressure. He also noted Chatman’s ability to extend plays and create opportunities in a power-spread offense, though he added that continued development with timing and ball placement will be important.

For Auburn fans, the hope is that Golesh can gradually restore the program to relevance before Chatman eventually arrives on campus. While Golesh’s coaching résumé remains a work in progress, he did show improvement during his time leading South Florida Bulls football. His best season came in 2025 when South Florida finished with a 9-3 record. Auburn supporters are now hoping that momentum can carry over as the Tigers attempt to climb back above the .500 mark and rebuild into a contender once again.
