Those numbers were far below expectations for a player who once ranked among baseball’s most promising young talents.
Now, Carlson will attempt to turn things around with the Phillies, who are hoping the 27-year-old can rediscover the form that once made him a highly regarded prospect with the St. Louis Cardinals. Philadelphia plans to assign him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he will get regular playing time and a chance to rebuild confidence at the plate.
Although Carlson is beginning his Phillies journey in the minors, the opportunity to reach the major-league roster remains very realistic. Philadelphia has dealt with occasional depth concerns in the outfield this season, and the organization is always searching for experienced players who can provide reliable bench production when injuries or roster changes occur.
