The St. Louis Cardinals have been one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 MLB season. Entering the year, expectations around the club were fairly low after a busy offseason that saw several notable veterans depart. However, the Cardinals have exceeded predictions and positioned themselves as a legitimate contender for a postseason berth as the season continues.
One of the biggest reasons for the team’s success has been its outstanding defense. Despite moving on from star players such as Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras, and Brendan Donovan during the offseason, St. Louis has remained one of baseball’s strongest defensive teams. The Cardinals currently rank near the top of the league in outs above average, proving how effective the club has been in the field. Their defense has quietly become one of the team’s greatest strengths, even if it hasn’t received as much national attention.
Strong pitching has also played a major role in the Cardinals’ success. Because the defense consistently supports the pitching staff, St. Louis has been able to win games without needing to dominate offensively every night. While the Cardinals are middle-of-the-pack in total runs scored, their balanced approach has helped them remain competitive throughout the season. The roster is also filled with young talent, giving fans reason to believe the team could continue improving as players gain more experience.
With the Aug. 3 trade deadline approaching, there is growing speculation about what direction the organization may take. Although the Cardinals are currently in playoff position, there is still a chance the front office could make surprising roster moves to strengthen the future. One possibility involves outfielder Lars Nootbaar.
Nootbaar is currently completing a minor league rehab assignment after dealing with injuries. During the offseason, his name frequently surfaced in trade rumors, and those discussions could return once he proves he is fully healthy. If Nootbaar performs well after returning, the Cardinals may view him as a valuable trade asset capable of bringing back a strong return. St. Louis already has several younger outfield options contributing this season, and top prospect Joshua Báez could also emerge as another option if the club decides to move Nootbaar.
Even if a trade happens, the Cardinals still appear capable of reaching the playoffs. Manager Oli Marmol has done an impressive job leading a young roster that continues to play confident and fundamentally sound baseball. At the moment, St. Louis occupies a Wild Card position and holds a comfortable lead over teams such as the Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies, and Cincinnati Reds in the standings. The team’s consistency suggests their success may not simply be a short-term hot streak.
Another major storyline this season has been the breakout performance of Jordan Walker. The talented slugger has already posted impressive numbers early in the season and appears on pace for a huge year offensively. Walker has shown increased power while also adding speed to his game, making him an even bigger threat. If he continues at this pace, a season featuring 35 home runs and 20 stolen bases is well within reach. His advanced statistics also support the idea that his production is sustainable.
Meanwhile, closer Riley O’Brien has emerged as a key piece in the bullpen. He already has double-digit saves along with an excellent ERA, and his consistency has helped stabilize the late innings for St. Louis. If the Cardinals continue winning games at their current pace, O’Brien could easily finish the year with more than 35 saves and establish himself as one of the league’s top relievers.
