Kansas State continued to build momentum for the future of its football program by securing a major commitment from one of the top defensive prospects in the country. The Wildcats earned a significant recruiting victory when four-star safety Cooper Ohnmacht announced his pledge to Kansas State, choosing the Wildcats over several prominent programs, including Penn State and Wisconsin.

Ohnmacht, a standout defensive back from Great Bend, Kansas, revealed his decision on Sunday. His commitment represents a major win for first-year head coach Collin Klein and the Wildcats’ recruiting staff as they continue to shape the future of the program. Keeping one of the state’s top talents at home was a priority for Kansas State, and the Wildcats successfully beat out strong competition from other Power Conference schools.
Recruiting services regard Ohnmacht as one of the premier prospects in the 2027 class. According to 247Sports, he holds a four-star rating and is considered the top-ranked player in the state of Kansas. He is also ranked among the best safeties in the nation and is viewed as one of the top overall prospects in his recruiting class. His impressive evaluations have made him a highly sought-after player, and his decision to commit to Kansas State is viewed as an important achievement for the Wildcats.
Ohnmacht has earned his reputation through strong performances on the field. During his junior season, he showcased his playmaking ability by recording 57 tackles and five interceptions. Two of those interceptions were returned for touchdowns, highlighting his knack for making game-changing plays. He also added two tackles for loss while serving as a key contributor in the secondary. His production demonstrates a combination of athleticism, instincts, and football intelligence that could make him an impact player at the collegiate level.
Even before his breakout junior campaign, Ohnmacht had shown signs of becoming a high-level prospect. In 2024, he accumulated 31 tackles and a tackle for loss while also scoring a touchdown on a kick return. His versatility and ability to contribute in multiple phases of the game have only increased his value as a recruit.
The commitment arrives during a period of transition for Kansas State football. Longtime head coach Chris Klieman concluded his tenure with the Wildcats following the 2025 season, ending a successful seven-year run. The program then turned to former offensive coordinator Collin Klein to lead the next chapter. As Klein begins his head coaching career, recruiting talented players like Ohnmacht is essential to maintaining the program’s competitiveness.
Kansas State finished the 2025 season with a 6-6 overall record and a 5-4 mark in conference play. The Wildcats placed 10th in the conference standings, finishing ahead of several rivals but falling short of the upper tier of the league. Following the season, the program elected not to participate in a bowl game because of the coaching transition, injuries, and player departures through the transfer portal.
With Ohnmacht now committed, Kansas State has added a cornerstone prospect who could play a key role in the Wildcats’ efforts to return to championship contention in the coming years.
