Breaking:Houston Astros Announce Starting Pitchers for Cleveland Guardians Series

The Houston Astros will enjoy an off day before returning to Daikin Park for a three-game home series against the Cleveland Guardians. Entering the matchup with a 35-41 record, Houston has shown signs of improvement lately, winning five of its last ten games and coming off a series victory against the Detroit Tigers. As they look to build momentum, the Astros have announced a trio of starting pitchers who each bring a different storyline into the weekend.

The series opener on Friday will feature rookie right-hander Tatsuya Imai facing Cleveland ace Tanner Bibee. Imai’s first season in Major League Baseball has been filled with challenges as he adjusts to the competition after making the move from Japan. Through nine starts, the 28-year-old owns a 3-3 record with a 6.43 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. Control has been one of his biggest issues, as he has issued 24 walks in only 35 innings of work.

His most recent outing was particularly difficult. Against the Kansas City Royals on June 12, Imai failed to get through the first inning, prompting the Astros to skip him once in the rotation. Despite the setback, Houston is giving him another opportunity to prove he can contribute at the major league level.

Standing in his way will be Bibee, who has quietly been one of Cleveland’s most reliable pitchers despite a misleading 2-7 record. Over his last seven starts, the Guardians right-hander has posted a strong 3.43 ERA and an impressive 0.92 WHIP. He has consistently limited baserunners and given Cleveland a chance to win. Houston’s lineup will need a disciplined approach at the plate because opportunities against Bibee are often limited.

Saturday’s matchup appears to favor the Astros, as they will send their top pitcher, Spencer Arrighetti, to the mound against left-hander Joey Cantillo. Arrighetti has established himself as the leader of Houston’s rotation in 2026, posting a stellar 2.57 ERA across 11 starts. Opposing hitters have managed just a .200 batting average against him, highlighting his dominance throughout the season.

Although Arrighetti took a loss in his most recent appearance after allowing four runs over six innings against Kansas City, his overall performance remains among the best in the American League. One difficult outing has done little to diminish what has otherwise been an excellent campaign.

Cantillo enters the game with a respectable 5-3 record and a 4.38 ERA. However, his recent performances have been less encouraging, as he has struggled to maintain consistency over the past several weeks. If Houston’s offense can capitalize early, the Astros could place pressure on the Guardians and put themselves in a strong position to secure the series.

The finale on Sunday remains somewhat uncertain. Houston will hand the ball to Kai-Wei Teng, while Cleveland has yet to announce its starter. Teng has filled multiple roles this season, working both as a starter and reliever, and enters the contest with a 4.31 ERA.

However, his latest outing against Detroit raised concerns. He lasted only 3.1 innings while allowing five earned runs, including three home runs. Teng possesses the talent to be effective, but consistency has been an issue. As a result, he enters Sunday as the biggest question mark in Houston’s rotation. If he can deliver a strong performance, the Astros could finish the series on a positive note and continue their push toward climbing the standings.
