Former Houston Astros World Series Champion Becomes Free Agent After Angels Exit
The Houston Astros began a new series against the Toronto Blue Jays in Canada on Monday night, shortly after securing a tight 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians at home on Sunday. A former Houston Astros World Series champion is now back on the open market. Trey Mancini, who was recently designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels, has officially elected free agency after being outrighted to Triple-A. The Angels announced the move through their public relations account, confirming that Mancini had cleared the process and chosen to explore other opportunities rather than remain in the minor leagues.
Mancini’s brief time with the Angels was limited but productive. In five games, he hit .308 while recording four hits, four RBIs and one run scored. Although the sample size was small, his performance showed that he could still contribute at the plate. That is why the decision caught the attention of fans and baseball observers, especially considering Mancini’s respected reputation and inspiring career journey.
The veteran first baseman and outfielder originally entered professional baseball when the Baltimore Orioles selected him in the eighth round of the 2013 MLB Draft. He went on to spend the first five and a half seasons of his major league career with Baltimore, where he became one of the organization’s most dependable offensive players.
His best statistical season came in 2019, when he hit .291 with 35 home runs and 97 RBIs. That campaign established him as one of the more dangerous bats in the Orioles’ lineup and showed his ability to produce at a high level over a full season.
However, Mancini’s story became about much more than baseball in 2020. He was diagnosed with colon cancer and missed the entire season while undergoing treatment. His return to the field was widely celebrated throughout the sport, as he became an example of resilience, courage and perseverance. His comeback added another powerful chapter to his career and earned admiration from fans across the league.
Mancini later became part of the Houston Astros’ 2022 World Series championship team. While his role was not the same as it had been in Baltimore, he still contributed to a club that went on to capture baseball’s biggest prize. That championship remains one of the defining moments of his professional journey.
After his time with the Astros, Mancini also had a short stint with the Chicago Cubs. He did not appear in the major leagues during the 2024 or 2025 seasons, making his recent return with the Angels even more noteworthy. In his first MLB game in nearly three years, he delivered three hits, reminding fans of the talent that once made him a key player in Baltimore.
Now that he is a free agent, the next question is whether another team will give Mancini an opportunity before the 2026 season comes to an end. Given his experience, leadership, and comeback story, he could still draw interest from a club searching for veteran depth and a right-handed bat.
