Tar Heels Welcome Cade Bennerman to Men’s Basketball Program
The North Carolina men’s basketball program has added more size and potential to its roster with the arrival of Cade Bennerman, a 7-foot redshirt freshman center from Nashville, Tennessee. Bennerman is joining the Tar Heels for the upcoming season after spending last year at Northwestern, where he redshirted.
His move to Chapel Hill gives UNC another young frontcourt player with room to grow and develop. At 7 feet tall, Bennerman brings natural size to the paint, something every major college basketball program values. While he is still early in his career, his high school résumé shows that he has the tools to become a useful piece for the Tar Heels over time.
Before entering college basketball, Bennerman played at Father Ryan High School in Nashville. During the 2025 season, he averaged 13.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. Those numbers showed his ability to contribute in several important areas, especially as an interior scorer and rim protector.
Bennerman played a major role in helping Father Ryan enjoy one of its best seasons in recent history. The team won 21 games, which marked the program’s highest win total in 16 years. His presence in the middle gave Father Ryan a dependable option around the basket and helped the team compete at a higher level.
One of the biggest moments of his high school career came during postseason play. Bennerman was named Region Tournament MVP after leading Father Ryan to the DII-AA Middle Region championship. That honor showed that he was not only productive during the regular season but also capable of stepping up when the games became more important.
His strong performance also earned him all-state recognition from the Tennessee Sports Writers Association. That award placed him among the top players in the state and confirmed the impact he made during his final high school season.
Now, Bennerman begins a new chapter with one of the most respected programs in college basketball. North Carolina has a long tradition of developing talented big men, and Bennerman will have the chance to grow within a competitive environment. His redshirt season at Northwestern may also help him adjust faster than a typical freshman because he has already experienced the structure and demands of a college basketball program.
For the Tar Heels, this addition is about both depth and development. Bennerman may need time to adjust to the speed, strength and physicality of ACC basketball, but his size gives him a strong foundation. If he continues to improve his footwork, rebounding, defensive positioning and finishing around the rim, he could become a valuable frontcourt option.
