Virginia Tech Baseball: Two Players Enter NCAA Transfer Portal After 2025 Season

Following a frustrating end to the 2025 baseball season, two Virginia Tech players have entered the NCAA transfer portal. The Hokies wrapped up their year with a 31-25 overall record and a disappointing 12-18 finish in ACC play. After defeating Stanford in the opening round of the ACC Baseball Tournament, their run came to a quick end with a second-round loss to 14th-ranked Clemson.

In response to the underwhelming season, head coach John Szefc made changes to his coaching staff. Longtime pitching coach Ryan Fecteau was dismissed after serving under Szefc for eight years in Blacksburg and one season at Maryland. Additionally, director of player development Kyle Sarazin was also let go.

As the offseason begins, two Hokie players have decided to explore other opportunities. Junior first baseman Garrett Michel and freshman pitcher Tucker Swails officially entered the NCAA transfer portal this week.

Michel, who hails from Denver, North Carolina, posted a .272 batting average with a .398 on-base percentage and an .866 OPS during the 2025 season. Despite showing solid production, his time at Virginia Tech was hampered by injuries. He may also consider going pro, as he’s eligible for the 2025 MLB Draft.

Swails, a redshirt freshman from Patrick County High School in Stuart, Virginia, did not see any action during his lone season with the Hokies. Listed at 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds, he excelled as both a pitcher and shortstop in high school, but redshirted his first year at Tech.

As the college baseball landscape continues to shift with players and coaches on the move, the Hokies will look to regroup and rebuild heading into the 2026 season. We wish both Michel and Swails success in the next chapters of their careers.
