By locking up one of their most powerful bats, the Phillies made it clear that their window to compete for a championship remains wide open. Still, despite that aggressive move, questions linger about the outfield following the departures of Nick Castellanos and Harrison Bader.
If Philadelphia truly intends to stay among the National League’s elite, another impact addition may be necessary.
According to FanSided writers Mark Powell and Wynston Wilcox, the solution could lie in Minnesota. They suggest the Phillies should pursue a trade for Byron Buxton, the dynamic center fielder for the Minnesota Twins. A two-time All-Star and winner of the Wilson Overall Defensive Player of the Year Award, Buxton would immediately stabilize center field while also adding significant firepower to the lineup.
Powell and Wilcox questioned what the Twins truly gain by holding onto Buxton at this stage. With Minnesota in a transitional phase, moving a high-value player could bring back prospects or major league-ready talent to accelerate a retooling process. From Philadelphia’s perspective, the timing makes sense. The Phillies have already invested heavily in their roster, particularly with Schwarber’s extension, and they understand the urgency of keeping pace with powerhouse clubs like the Los Angeles Dodgers. Adding another proven All-Star could be the difference between falling short and reaching the World Series.
On the field, Buxton’s production speaks for itself. Last season, he posted a .264 batting average with a .327 on-base percentage and an impressive .551 slugging percentage, good for an .878 OPS. Across 126 games, he tallied 21 doubles, 35 home runs, and 83 RBIs. Those numbers would not only replace Castellanos’ offensive output but likely surpass it. Beyond the bat, Buxton’s elite range and defensive instincts in center field would significantly upgrade Philadelphia’s run prevention. His presence would allow the Phillies to strengthen both sides of the game without sacrificing lineup balance.
Financially, the deal could be workable. Buxton is owed approximately $45 million over the next three seasons, a figure that appears reasonable for a player of his caliber. For a franchise that has already demonstrated a willingness to spend in pursuit of contention, that commitment may not be a deterrent. In fact, compared to other top-tier outfielders, Buxton’s contract could be viewed as a relative bargain.
Philadelphia and Minnesota have completed multiple trades in recent seasons, suggesting there is already a working relationship between the front offices. If the Phillies believe Buxton is the missing piece, they may need to act decisively before another contender steps in.
