The St. Louis Cardinals have made a roster decision involving one of their promising pitchers, officially sending him down to the minor leagues as the team prepares for the upcoming Major League Baseball season. On Monday, the organization confirmed that pitcher Quinn Mathews was optioned to Triple-A, meaning he will start the season with the Memphis Redbirds, the Cardinals’ Triple-A affiliate.
Although the move removes him from the major league roster for now, it does not diminish the club’s belief in his potential. Throughout spring preparations, the Cardinals had not completely ruled out the possibility of the talented left-hander earning a spot in the major league bullpen. His strong performances over the past year placed him on the radar as a candidate who could help the team sooner rather than later.
Ultimately, however, the Cardinals decided that the best path for his development is to continue pitching regularly in the starting rotation at Triple-A Memphis. By doing so, he will be able to log more innings, further refine his pitch mix, and maintain the routine of starting games rather than adjusting to a relief role in the majors.
The decision also reflects the depth the Cardinals currently have on their pitching staff. With several experienced arms competing for limited bullpen positions, the team opted to allow the young pitcher more time to grow in the minors rather than rushing him into a situational role at the major league level. For developing pitchers, consistent starts often provide more valuable experience than occasional relief appearances.
Last season, the left-hander delivered impressive numbers while pitching for the Springfield Cardinals, the organization’s Double-A affiliate. During the 2025 campaign, he posted an excellent 2.98 earned run average (ERA) and maintained a solid 1.11 WHIP over 114.2 innings of work. Even more encouraging was his command and ability to miss bats, striking out 134 hitters while issuing just 33 walks. Those statistics highlighted both his effectiveness and his control on the mound, two qualities that have made him one of the more intriguing pitching prospects in the Cardinals’ farm system.
Such performances helped accelerate his rise through the minor leagues and drew the attention of the major league coaching staff. His combination of strikeout ability, composure on the mound, and consistent command suggests he could play an important role in the Cardinals’ pitching plans in the future.
Beginning the season at Triple-A Memphis gives him the opportunity to face more advanced hitters and continue sharpening his skills. The Triple-A level is widely considered the final step before the majors, and strong performances there often lead to quick call-ups when teams need reinforcements during the season.
For the Cardinals, this move is less about demotion and more about preparation. By allowing the young pitcher to develop as a starter in Memphis, the organization ensures that he will be ready if the team needs rotation depth or bullpen help later in the year.
If he continues to perform at the same level he displayed in Double-A, it may not be long before fans see him pitching at Busch Stadium.
