The career of former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martínez has officially come to a close, marking the end of a journey that once promised greatness but ultimately became defined by both brilliance and setbacks. The 34-year-old right-hander announced his retirement through a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, bringing an end to his time in professional baseball.
Martínez, affectionately known as “Tsunami,” spent his entire Major League career with the Cardinals, appearing in the big leagues for nine seasons. Over that span, he compiled a 62–52 record with a 3.74 earned run average and recorded two complete-game shutouts. At his peak, he was among the most electric arms in the league, earning All-Star honors in both 2015 and 2017.
His most dominant stretch came between 2015 and 2017, when he firmly established himself as the ace of the Cardinals’ pitching staff. During those three seasons, Martínez posted an impressive 42–27 record with a 3.24 ERA and a 126 ERA+, highlighting his effectiveness compared to league averages. His combination of velocity, movement, and confidence on the mound made him a cornerstone of St. Louis’ rotation and one of the most exciting pitchers to watch during that period.
Martínez also played a role in the Cardinals’ 2013 postseason run, contributing out of the bullpen during their push to the World Series. Though he logged just 12.2 innings that year, he made an impact with a solid 3.55 ERA and 11 strikeouts, giving fans an early glimpse of the talent that would soon blossom.

He received an 80-game suspension after testing positive for the performance-enhancing substance ibutamoren, and later that year, he was handed an additional 85-game suspension for violating the league’s policies regarding domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. These incidents further complicated his path back to the majors and cast a shadow over his career.
Despite the challenges and controversies, Martínez expressed gratitude in his retirement message, thanking fans and supporters who stood by him throughout his journey. His career serves as a reminder of both the heights a player can reach and how quickly circumstances can change.
