Jeff Passan Predicts Mariners Will Reach the World Series, Citing Four Key Strengths
With success comes rising expectations, and the Seattle Mariners are entering the 2026 season with plenty of both. After capturing the American League West title and advancing to the AL Championship Series in 2025, the Mariners are now widely viewed as serious contenders to reach the World Series — something the franchise has never achieved as it marks its 50th anniversary season.

Among those high on Seattle is ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan, who recently shared his bold prediction ahead of Opening Day. Speaking on Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk, Passan made it clear he believes the Mariners are primed for a historic run.
“I’m picking the Seattle Mariners to make the World Series this year,” Passan said. “In my view, they’re the best team in the American League and arguably the second-best in all of baseball.” Despite joking about potentially “jinxing” the team, Passan emphasized that Seattle’s roster construction and overall balance make them difficult to overlook.
Passan pointed to four major reasons behind his confidence in the Mariners.
1. Dominant Starting Rotation
Seattle’s pitching rotation is one of its biggest strengths. The team is expected to rely heavily on Bryan Woo, Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, and Luis Castillo, all of whom have proven to be reliable starters. Additionally, Bryce Miller — currently beginning the season on the injured list — showed encouraging signs during spring training, particularly with improved velocity. Emerson Hancock has also impressed, giving the Mariners even more depth. While top prospects like Ryan Sloan and Kade Anderson may not feature this year, their presence adds future upside.
2. Strong and Versatile Bullpen
The Mariners also boast one of the more complete bullpens in baseball. Andrés Muñoz stands out as an elite closer, often mentioned alongside the league’s best. Setup man Matt Brash provides another high-impact arm, while left-handers José Ferrer and Gabe Speier offer matchup flexibility. Power pitchers like Eduard Bazardo and Carlos Vargas round out a deep relief group. Seattle has also shown a consistent ability to develop effective relievers, which further strengthens this unit.
3. Well-Rounded Infield
Offensively and defensively, the Mariners’ infield appears solid and versatile. Cal Raleigh continues to establish himself as one of the top catchers in the game. The return of Josh Naylor brings energy and clubhouse chemistry, while young infielder Cole Young impressed with his power during spring training. Prospect Colt Emerson adds depth and future promise, while Leo Rivas holds down shortstop until J.P. Crawford returns from injury. Brendon Donovan’s versatility and consistency at the plate provide additional value across multiple positions.
4. Balanced and High-Potential Roster
Seattle’s overall roster combines reliability with star potential. Randy Arozarena offers stability in left field, while Julio Rodríguez remains the centerpiece in center field — with hopes that 2026 could be his MVP-caliber breakout season. The team also has multiple options in right field and designated hitter, including Dom Canzone, Victor Robles, Rob Refsnyder, and Luke Raley, giving them flexibility in managing playing time and matchups.
Ultimately, Passan believes the Mariners’ blend of depth, talent, and upside sets them apart in the American League. With both a high floor and a high ceiling, Seattle appears well-positioned to compete at the highest level.
If Passan’s prediction holds true, 2026 could become a landmark year for the Mariners as they chase their first-ever World Series appearance.
